The senior scores double digits in kills as Bainbridge wins two big league games.
Kelcey Dunaway had two big games and the Bainbridge volleyball team benefited from her efforts in wins over Holy Names and Seattle Prep this week.
Against the Cougars, Dunaway recorded 14 kills, 14 digs, five blocks and four aces in their 25-17, 25-13, 13-25 and 25-18 win Tuesday.
Against the Panthers, Dunaway posted a line of 21 kills, 18 digs and nine blocks along with a pass rating of 2.4 in their 25-23, 25-23, 23-25 and 25-23 win Thursday.
“It was ridiculous,” said head coach Julie Miller of Dunaway’s pass rating, which is defined as how well a player passes during a game on a scale of zero to three, with three being perfect.
She also got help from her teammates in the two wins as Chelsea Bell had 34 assists while Emily Donohue had 14 kills and 10 digs against Holy Names.
Hillary Grant added 18 digs against the Cougars.
Donohue had seven kills and 13 digs against Seattle Prep while Bell had 41 assists to go with her five kills.
Grant had 21 digs.
“It was a good game (against Prep),” Miller said. “They’d pull ahead and we’d creep back, we would get ahead and they would come back. It was a really fun and exciting game to play and watch.”
The Spartans travel to arch-rival Bishop Blanchet next Tuesday to battle for the Mountain Division lead, then return home on Thursday to face Lakeside.
Game time is at 6 p.m.
Golfers earn another win
Both golf teams earned wins this week.
The girls team easily defeated Nathan Hale 110-30 Tuesday despite Raider freshman Caitlin Rice winning the medal with a six-over 42.
She had two birdies and two pars.
Anna Bourland and Annalise Herr led the way for the Spartans with 29 Stableford points.
She had four pars and four bogies but shot a triple bogey on the seventh hole for a score of 43.
Herr had four pars on her round to tie Bourland for the best score on the team.
Ryan Nottingham scored 28 points as she notched four pars but had a double bogey on the second hole and a triple bogey on the third hole to put her behind the top two.
Melanie Trygg and Peyton Lunzer scored 24 points each.
The boys team also defeated Nathan Hale on Tuesday 97-58.
Kyle Hurt shot a one-over 36 to win medalist honors for the match.
Carl Jonson shot a 37, while Bobby Griffin, Sean Leonard and Kyle Schnieder all shot a 39 to count toward the team score.
Kyle Leonard shot a 40, while Peter Leslie carded a 41 and Ross Olason shot a 46.
The Spartans play Ingraham Monday, then host Lakeside on Tuesday at Wing Point.
Both matches start at 3:30 p.m.
Kickers split matches for week
The Bainbridge girls soccer team took down West Seattle 5-1 on Tuesday, but could only score once in a 1-1 tie with Eastside Catholic Thursday.
Against the Wildcats, Maddie Ginder got things going with a goal in the fifth minute as she put one in from the corner of the penalty area just in front of the goalkeeper.
West Seattle tied it up in the 14th minute when they caught the Spartan goalkeeper out of position, but Alex Mynatt put Bainbridge ahead for good when she scored on a breakaway goal a minute before the half.
In the second half, the Spartans scored three to put the game away.
Kathryn Deveraux scored in the 67th minute from the corner of the penalty area, then Hallie Swan scored from the center of the penalty area five minutes later.
Kelsey Thompson wrapped up the scoring with a goal from just inside the penalty area on an assist from Kristen Saksa in the 79th minute.
Against the Crusaders, Carly Schilperoort scored in the 44th minute off an assist from Lauren Pomeroy from 25 yards out, but Lucy Donahue tied it in the 48th minute off a cross pass from Ginder.
“(We had) much better ball movement offensively and defensively they played much tighter, limiting the amount of opportunities for West Seattle,” head coach Scott Druker said. “(Against Eastside Catholic) we dominated the game mostly in the second half but our offense could not capitalize on our opportunities.”
Bainbridge travels to Seattle next Tuesday to play Holy Names at 3:30 p.m.
