“The girls’ basketball team played 27 fairly ordinary minutes on Friday against visiting Sequim. They also played five minutes of very extraordinary basketball en route to a 63-50 win that maintained their undefeated Olympic League record.Midway through the opening quarter the score was a modest 6-6.For the rest of the quarter and the beginning of the second, Bainbridge nearly caused the scorekeeper to develop carpal tunnel syndrome keeping up with the onslaught of Spartan hoops. Nearly every shot went in, nearly every pass threaded its way through the Wolves’ defense to find an open shooter, nearly every rebound ended up in Spartan hands, and the few shots the Wolves got off in the face of a smothering defense caromed off the rim or missed it altogether. Emily Pierce hit a short jumper and Christine Schwager followed with a 10-footer to ignite the explosion. Russell fed Pierce. Fab Rezayat fed Russell. Pierce scored on an inbounds pass. Russell hit a turnaround. Russell fed Christine Kimball for an easy layin. Morgan Zajonc drained two free throws. End of quarter. Five seconds into the second, Jenny Maurer hit an eight-foot jumper. Russell hit a five-foot jumper and followed with a jumper from the free throw line. Spartans 28, Wolves 6.Sequim finally halted the carnage with a jumper and trey, then made a modest run to close to within 34-19. But in the final minute, Pierce hit a putback, Natalie Berry made a free throw and Maurer drained a trey to push the lead out to 40-19. Russell had a dozen and Pierce had eight at the break. The Spartans led 53-29 at the end of three quarters and jumpers by Pierce and Russell extended their lead to 63-35 halfway through the final quarter. At that point, Sequim – playing against the Spartan second string – took control of the game behind 5-8 sophomore Megan Thompson and scored the game’s final 15 points to make the final score more respectable. Thompson displayed a knack for getting free under the hoop for easy bank shots and lit up the Spartans for 17 points in the quarter to finish with 29 points, the season-high for an opposing player.Pierce had a dozen of her own in the second half to finish with 20, while Russell had 16 and Maurer chipped in with nine. We picked them apart early, said coach Penny Gienger. It’s hard to stay focused when you’re up that much. They scored way too easily at the end. After last night’s game at Port Townsend, the team travels to Port Angeles on Friday. A Spartan win would virtually guarantee an Olympic League championship, while the Roughriders will not only be seeking to avenge December’s loss but also a share of the league lead.Bainbridge JVs 74, Sequim JVs 25 – Four girls scored in double figures as the Spartans in what coach Korrie Beemer called our best game of the year. They were actually a pretty decent team, Beemer said. They pressed almost the whole game, and that created a lot of 3-on-2 breaks. Someone counted 13 left-handed shots for us, which is incredible for a freshman team.Lee Maloney had a game-high 17 points, Tasha Francis had 15, Haley Wiggins added 12 and Tiana Gallagher notched 10. “
“Girls romp early, winA withering early attack left the team with a perfect mark in league play.”
