Girls wrestlers hope to pin their competition

GIRLS WRESTLING

Bainbridge

Head coach: Dan Pippinger

Key returners: Senior Alexandra Morrison

Outlook: Morrison is the only Spartan left from last year’s team. Since the Spartans lineup is small and lacks postseason experience, they could struggle this season.

Schedule: Dec. 7, 6 p.m. at North Kitsap; Jan. 4, 6 p.m. at Sequim; Jan. 11. 7 p.m. at Olympic; Jan. 25, 7 p.m. at Bremerton

Bremerton

Head coach: William Richardson

Key returners: Sophomore Grace Leota

Outlook: Bremerton’s girls team was able to place at a few tournaments last season. However, the Knights struggled to take home medals. However, Leota finished top seven in the 155-pound class rankings last season. She was the youngest wrestler to place in that weight division.

Schedule: Dec. 7, 6 p.m. at North Kitsap; Dec. 14, 7 p.m. vs. Olympic and North Kitsap; Jan. 11, 7 p.m. vs. Port Angeles and Sequim; Jan. 18, 7 p.m. at North Mason; Jan. 25, 7 p.m. vs. Bainbridge and Kingston

Central Kitsap

Head coach: Mike Schmitt

Key returners: Junior Savannah Sinclair

Outlook: Several Cougars graduated, leaving only a couple of girls on the roster. Therefore, the Cougars have holes they need to fill. However, Sinclair comes off a fourth-place finish at state and looks for a title this season.

Schedule: Dec. 17, Hammer Head Tournament at Kitsap County Fairgrounds

Kingston

Head coach: Casey Nelson

Key returners: None

Outlook: Kingston’s only wrestler graduated last season. Therefore, if the Buccaneers field a girls wrestling team, it will be new faces. So, expectations should not be set too high.

Schedule: Dec. 7, 6 p.m. at North Kitsap; Jan. 11, 6 p.m. vs. North Kitsap; Jan. 25, 8 p.m. at Bremerton

Klahowya

Head coach: Carl Young

Key returners: Seniors Phoebe Gordon, Adilyn Murray and Mya Young

Outlook: No Eagles qualified for state last season. But half of their roster will be seniors hungry to make an impact for the program.

Schedule: Dec. 7, 5:30 p.m. at East Jefferson; Dec. 17, Hammer Head Tournament at Kitsap County Fairgrounds; Jan. 21, 8 a.m. at River Ridge Rumble

North Kitsap

Head coach: Robert Gomez

Key returners: Senior Makayla Heymann

Outlook: Although the Vikings lack state qualifiers, Heymann lacks the final step, a gold medal. Heymann has qualified for the state tournament twice, finishing fifth last season. She and the Vikings will look to make a giant leap this year.

Schedule: Dec. 7, 6 p.m. OL Girls Duals; Dec. 14, 7 p.m. at Olympic and Bremerton; Jan. 11, 6 p.m. at Kingston

Olympic

Head coach: Caleb O’Halek

Key returners: Senior Alexandrea Templeton

Outlook: Templeton headlines a small roster. The Trojans did have a strong finish at state last year, finishing 33rd out of 149 teams. Templeton led that charge with a state title in the 125-pound class and will look to repeat.

Schedule: Dec. 7, 6 p.m. at North Kitsap; Dec. 14, vs. North Kitsap and Bremerton; Jan. 11. 7 p.m. vs. Bainbridge; Jan. 18, at Port Angeles

South Kitsap

Head coach: Conner Hartmann

Key returners: Senior Monica Kaiser, junior Rosemary Brooks and sophomore Tayla Abundis

Outlook: Although South Kitsap had three wrestlers last season, they made an impact. Kaiser finished second at 140 pounds while Brooks placed third at 115 pounds. If the Wolves can build depth, they can become long-shot contenders.

Schedule: Dec. 17, Hammer Head Tournament at Kitsap County Fairgrounds; Jan. 21, 8 a.m. at River Ridge Rumble
