“Stephanie Hylen got off to an excellent start at Friday’s 3A WIAA Gymnastics Championships, scoring 9.0 on floor and 8.6 on vault. But uncharacteristic errors dropped her scores in bars (7.325) and beam (7.75) from levels she’d maintained for most of the season and she finished with an all-around score of 32.675.Senior Melissa Borgen, the only other Spartan entrant, scored a 7.95 in the vault. My hand slipped a little on the bars, but I don’t dwell on it, Hylen said. Part of gymnastics is presentation. Before Hylen began her beam routine, several teammates who hadn’t qualified but came down to offer support called out We love you, Steph, which drew a smile from the already weary gymnast. But for the first time all season, she fell.Usually I don’t let things like that get to me. But this time I got a little tentative in the rest of the routine, she said.Coach Cindy Guy thought that Hylen, a junior competing in her second state meet, had the toughest possible rotation.Beginning with floor takes a lot of energy, and it’s hard to end on beam when you’re tired, Guy said. And we left Bainbridge early because of the weather, so we wound up sitting through the whole 4A meet before we could even start. That’s a long time to wait.She added: It was fun to have some of our kids there to help with support. Nathan Hale didn’t have any of their other kids come out.Hylen noted that her beam score had declined from 9.25 at metro and 8.875 at the district meet, But, she said, The point of state is to get here. “
