It was a photo finish for Bainbridge cross country runners Isabel Ferguson and Signe Lindquist.
The two put on a good kick in the home stretch of Wednesday’s league meet at Battle Point Park to try and beat out Seattle Prep’s Joey Bosserman, but missed out by a second and tied for second with the same time of 20:58.
Ferguson said they were trying to take it easy after a long, hot day running in the Sunfair Invitational in Yakima over the weekend.
“We were trying to pace ourselves for the first two miles then seeing what we had on the last one,” she said. “I think they were doing a similar thing.”
Several Spartan girls had good times that placed them in the top 20 at the meet.
Pearl Terry took fifth overall with a time of 21:45 while Courtney Odell was eighth with a time of 22:07. Ivy Terry was 12th with a time of 22:44 while Theo Fehsenfeld was 17th with a time of 23:04. All were instrumental in Bainbridge beating out Prep and Bishop Blanchet for first with 28 points.
For the boys, they had a tougher go of it against the Panthers and Braves, taking third in the meet with 77 points.
Sean LaBelle was 11th overall with a time of 17:48 while Tyler Cox was right behind him with a time of 17:50.
Tomas Delgado was 20th with a time of 18:28.
Senior co-captain John Murphy said they’ve had some injuries to runners that have hampered them, but said he’s excited to see what the future brings for the team.
At the Sunfair Invitational, several Bainbridge runners shined bright on a hot day.
Signe Lindquist was the top finisher as she won the freshman mixed two-mile run by placing first out of 83 girls entered with a time of 12:53.55. Terry was 12th with a time of 14:05.50.
Austin Harper took 12th out of 151 boys with a time of 11:49.29.
Ferguson was 30th in the three-mile girls’ varsity race with a time of 20:48 while Cox was 40th in the three-mile boys’ varsity race.
Head coach Anne Howard Lindquist said the team did great handling the heat and the large crowds. Now it’s a matter of getting ready for the league and district meets.
“It’s that district meet we’ll really key on,” she said. “Fortunately we have three weeks and we’ll use those three weeks to get ready.”
Bainbridge travels to the Ft. Warden Invitational in Port Townsend Saturday.
