The latest Spartan high school team to embark from the shores of Bainbridge Island proved they’ve got considerable wind in their sails at the first major regatta of the season.
The Bainbridge High sailing team competed at the Sail Sand Point Regatta in Seattle on March 16-17. Nine members from the island team competed along side 140 sailers from high schools across the Puget Sound including those Orcas Island and Olympia. A team from as far as from Portland, Ore. also made the journey to compete.
Connor Juckniess, Will Brown and Blake Bentzen of Bainbridge sailed in the silver fleet and tied with a boat from Orcas Island to win second place. They competed in a field of 26 boats.
Max Popken, Nate Greason, Lea Fetterman and Nels Challinor placed third for the Spartans in the gold fleet, also going head-to-head with 26 boats.
BHS’ Carissa Block and Stasi Burzycki, along with the Sehome team from Bellingham, placed sixth in the same race.
Spartan sailors Max Popken and Nate Greason had the top individual boat finish in the entire regatta.
The high school sailing team is now preparing for the next challenge; the Island Cup, held on San Juan Island on April 6-7.
