Bainbridge’s girls basketball season got off to a rough start Nov. 30 as the visiting Issaquah Eagles simply outran, outshot and outmatched the Spartans 79-31.
The Spartans struggled to get a shot off all night, let alone be in position to get one off under the force of Issaquah’s suffocating full-court press. “They were disciplined defensively and executed on our mistakes,” Spartan coach Zach Burnham said. “I thought we fought hard throughout the game.”
Despite that effort, it clearly was not Bainbridge’s night. An early 10-2 deficit only expanded from there to 21-9 at the end of the first quarter, the Spartans’ only field goal coming from senior Maia Greiwe with 6:15 to go. The remaining points came from the start of a long night of free throw practice.
“I believe we shot close to 28, 29 free throws. I think we were being aggressive, and I’m proud of my girls for getting to the line as much as they did,” Burnham said.
The Spartans next field goal came from Greiwe again with 5:02 remaining in the half, senior Bella Ramirez getting into the action with her own shot at the 1:11 mark.
The second half was more of the same, Issaquah keeping the pressure on while Bainbridge just was not able to hit what little shots it could manage. Ramirez added a field goal and a three-pointer in the third quarter, along with sophomore Kaela Cole’s first made shot from the floor. Freshman Josie Knapp got her first varsity points in the fourth quarter.
Ramirez tallied 11 points on the night, Greiwe finished with seven and senior Hannah Bounketh scored three first-quarter points on foul shots.
