“The Bainbridge High School girls’ varsity soccer team snapped a three-game losing streak with victories this week against Port Townsend and Bremerton.The Spartans, 3-3-1 on the season, got a breather from a tough slate of 4A opponents with a 6-0 romp on the Redskins’ home turf Tuesday night. Junior Suzanne Fossum, normally a defender, scored twice against the winless opponent. Christen Faltermeier, Fab Rezayat, Lauren Hume and Adriana Gonzalez-Medina each tallied once. Rezayat and Emily Haber each had assists.Thursday, Lindsay Carlson scored the second of her two goals in the 34th minute of play to snap a 1-1 tie in a home contest against the 2-5 Knights. Her first goal, in the 14th minute, was on a 20-yard run on a through-ball from Hume, while her second was unassisted.Sophomore Crisma Biggs contributed an insurance goal just 22 seconds later before the two teams settled into a second-half defensive struggle.It was nice to go and have a couple of kick-back games, Bainbridge coach Susan Fowler said. It gave the girls a chance for a little sigh of relief before we play against NK on Tuesday – and that should be a real tough game.Bainbridge JV 4, Bremerton 0: The Spartans stretched their win streak of 30-plus games behind two goals from Rebecca Ivey and one each from Elizabeth Montoya and Morgan Zajonc.Tuesday, Bainbridge won in a 12-0 romp over Port Townsend. Shawnee Snyder, Kyle McFarlane, Alex Evans and Montoya scored two goals apiece, while Martha Swain, Alex Riede, Amanda Johncock and Kelley Case tallied one apiece.Swimmers sweep double-dual meetAfter a tough two-point loss in last Saturday’s dual meet against Mercer Island at the King County Aquatics Center, the Bainbridge Spartan girls’ swim and dive team powered over Klahowya and Olympic in a double-dual Tuesday.According to Bainbridge coach Greg Colby, Saturday’s 147-145 loss was tough in that Bainbridge won nine of the 12 events. However, scoring eight lanes at the bigger pool, the Mercer Islanders won the battle of depth.They got us on depth, just barely, Colby said.Tuesday’s meet at Bremerton was more of a warmup for yesterday’s homecoming blockbuster against Bellevue. Bainbridge outswam Klahowya 145-40 and Bremerton 138-33.Bainbridge will be at Port Angeles next Tuesday afternoon, and will pack the pool with the Spartan Relays next Saturday. The relays – always a fan and participant favorite – start at 1 p.m. Visiting will be Marysville-Pillchuck, Mercer Island, Sehome, Lakes and Gig Harbor.Spartan runners outdistance foesThe Bainbridge Spartan boys’ and girls’ cross country teams used pack mentality to outrun Bremerton and Klahowya in double-dual meet action Thursday afternoon in Bremerton.Evan Galloway broke the tape at the finish line for Bainbridge as the boys packed six runners in the top eight positions, overall. The boys defeated Bremerton 19-42 (low score wins) and Klahowya 18-45.Galloway covered the 2.75-mile NAD Park course in 15:51. Also scoring for Bainbridge was Andy Reese (third), Colin Kuester (fifth), Paul Lang (sixth) and Max Gordon (seventh). Rounding out the Bainbridge contingent and securing the Spartan victory by blocking opponents’ scoring efforts, Steve Gardiner took eighth and Tim Freeman finished 11th.In the girls’ competition, although Bremerton’s Lih Kuhlman crossed the line in 19:57 to take first, Bainbridge swept the next six positions to overwhelm the opposition and bury Bremerton 20-42. Klahowya did not have enough runners to constitute an official team.Leading the way was junior Sarah Grue at 20:28, for second place. Following Grue, in order, were Audrey Bennett, Lia Layton, Colleen Burke, Christi Lubovich and Sarah Dean. Also finishing for Bainbridge were Sandra Corpuz in 10th, McKenzie Adams 13th, Carla Inch 14th, Samantha Olson 15th, Jamie Fleischfresser 16th and Mikal Hemingway 17th.Bainbridge also overwhelmed Bremerton in the boys’ JV race, 18-45. Andrew Morales and Ryan Kehrl put together a one-two finish for the Spartans, while wrapping up the scoring positions for Bainbridge were Luke Preble in fourth, Chad Weldy fifth, Joey Tarbill sixth, Jake Kanev seventh and Alex Scott in eighth.Bainbridge will be at home Thursday, Oct. 12, to face Port Angeles and Port Townsend in another double-dual race.Poloists split week’s contestsAfter bombing Peninsula Tuesday night, 9-3, the Spartan boys’ water polo team was ready for a clash with the state powerhouse Curtis on Thursday.The water was boiling with excitement in Tacoma as Bainbridge took early command, leading 3-2 at halftime and 7-5 at the end of the third quarter.However, with Spartan starting goalkeeper Adam Gunn sitting out half of the final quarter after a point-blank shot to the face, Curtis managed to use the home pool advantage to battle back to a 8-8 tie at the end of regulation. In the first of two overtime quarters, Curtis scored right at the end on a controversial call. According to Bainbridge coach Jeff Clark, the whistle ending the quarter had sounded at about the same time a shot was taken. The Bainbridge goalkeeper let the ball pass figuring the shot did not count. One official called the goal good, the other negated the goal. Unfortunately for the Spartans, the first official’s call held, and Curtis took the 9-8 lead.Bainbridge was unable to tie the score in the second overtime quarter, giving Curtis the victory.We played great, Clark said.
