“The Spartan girls defeated Port Townsend on Tuesday, 59-39, in what coach Penny Gienger called a great game.Our defense was really tough, Gienger said, and Christine (Schwager) played well on their best player.The game also marked junior guard Fab Rezayat’s return to full health after several weeks battling the flu. She scored 11 points, dished out six assists, and had an eye-popping one-handed bounce pass that somehow threaded its way through three Redskins to set up an easy shot. She opened the game by taking the opening tip and feeding Emily Pierce for an quick layin and a lead the Spartans never relinquished. Less than a minute later, she beat full-court pressure and scored on a layin herself.Tight defense pressure forced two early Redskin 30-second violations, and with the score 6-4, Alice Russell hit a 10-footer to begin a seven-point run in just over two minutes. The first quarter ended with the Spartans up 15-8.Russell and Rezayat opened the second quarter with five-footers, and Natalie Berry ended it with a nifty five-foot turnaround shot with less than two seconds remaining as Bainbridge extended its lead to 31-19 at the half.Rezayat fed Pierce for a layin to ignite an eight-point run in just over two minutes in the third quarter. It culminated with Schwager making a nice fake and driving to the hoop to make the score 41-21 with just over three minutes left and putting the game away. Rezayat put an exclamation point on the quarter by sinking a trey from the top of the key with two seconds showing on the clock for a 48-29 lead.Morgan Zajonc opened the final quarter with another trey. Rezayat gave the Spartans their biggest lead of the evening with a steal and layin, followed a pullup jumper halfway through the period for a 57-33 lead. Lee Maloney rounded out Spartan scoring with a 10-footer.With 17 assists, most of them leading to easy layins, the Spartans shot 27 of 59 for 46 percent. Pierce led the team with 16 points, Russell had 12, and Rezayat added 11 as the trio shot a combined 18 of 30. Russell had a team-high 10 rebounds and blocked three shots. Zajonc, Berry and Maloney each had a rejection to further frustrate the Redskins, who had few good looks at the basket because of the Spartan game-long defensive pressure.The win made the Spartans 13-1 in league and 13-5 overall heading into last night’s game at Central Kitsap before they close the regular season tonight against North Kitsap.Bainbridge JVs 50, Port Townsend JVs 13 – Playing an undersized team with just one player over 5’6, the Spartans led 18-2 at the half, giving up just a single field goal. Haley Wiggins led the team with 16 points, while Lee Maloney added 14.Boys fall to Port TownsendAfter a slow start, the boys’ basketball team scored 30 points in the middle two quarters at Port Townsend to take a 36-32 lead into the final quarter. They expanded the lead to seven points with four minutes to go, but gave up the final 14 points of the game to the suddenly hot-handed Redskins, falling 53-46.We got out of our tempo and played a little too tentatively, said coach Jeff Eller. We’ve had a lot of close games like this one but previously we’d been able to finish them. Up to those last few minutes, our defense had been unbelievable.Bainbridge remained in third place in the Olympic League as Port Angeles beat Bremerton. The team’s playoff hopes remained strong going into last night’s game against Central Kitsap as the magic number remained at two with Bremerton now factored into the mix.Teddy Picha was the only Spartan in double figures with 14. Nick Thompson had nine and Zach Whedbee added eight. Picha had a team-high rebounds and blocked four shots.The team concludes the regular season with a game at North Kitsap tonight. If they qualify for the playoffs, the first game would be a loser-out contest on Tuesday evening hosted by the Pierce County League’s fifth-place team.Frosh season goes up and down Freshman basketball coach Jake Haley had just one word of his team’s eight-win, 11-loss record:Sinuatal.Haley, a math teacher, was referring to a sine wave, an up-and-down curving motion plotted on a graph.He cited back-to-back games against Metro League teams as an example.We lost to O’Dea by 20, Haley said, then scored 70 points and pushed Ballard to double overtime before losing by two points.He cited a 45-42 home-court win over Sequim on January 8 as the season’s high point.Both teams played a solid game, he said.
