SEATTLE – The Bainbridge High varsity coed tennis team was bested 8-3 by Lakeside High last Wednesday.
“The match was very close,” said BHS team spokesman Steven Curtis. “Our kids played well overall.”
Lakeside, Curtis explained, is the top-ranked team in the league this season and an especially difficult opponent for the Spartan squad.
“We got close to beating them,” Curtis said. “We lost four third set matches.”
Lakeside claimed wins in all of the Girls and Boys Doubles matches as well as the Mixed Doubles event.
Quinn Dassel and Hayden Tutty were beaten 6-2, 6-1 in the Girls Doubles No. 1 match, as were Elizabeth Viele and Lilly Fagerlund beaten 2-6, 6-2, 11-9 in the No. 2 match.
Maxwell Brown and Kevin Nikomborirak lost the Boys Doubles No. 1 match 6-3, 6-3.
In the Boys Doubles No. 2 match, Alec Chan and Jeremy Lipshutz were beaten 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 as well.
The Mixed Doubles event team of Tommy Zech and Maddy Brito were defeated 6-2, 6-4.
Sammi Jiang lost to Viv Daniel 6-0, 6-0 in the Girls Singles No. 1 match, but Ellie Van Slyke scored the first win for Bainbridge 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 2 event.
Lakeside came back strong in the third Girls Singles match, however, and Tara Nikomborirak was beaten 5-7, 7-6, 6-1.
Bainbridge did the best overall in Boys Singles, winning two out of three events.
Ben Devries claimed a 7-5, 6-3 win in Boys Singles No. 1, and Eli Wagner won No. 3 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Holt Ogden was defeated in the No. 2 Boys Singles match, however, 7-5, 6-7, 1-6.
