Several junior golfers, including some who play for the Bainbridge High School golf team, have had standout performances on links near and far this season.
At the WJGA state tournament July 30 – Aug. 1 at the Manito Golf and Country Club, Carl Jonson took first in the boys 14-15 year-old age division by shooting a three-day total of 220 with a high of 77 and a low of 70.
Jonson made it by finishing in a three-way tie for first at the District 3 tournament at the Home Course in Dupont July 21-22.
With his wins, Jonson qualified with three other golfers for the Hogan Cup team, which will play for the title at Riverside Golf and Country Club Thursday and Friday.
Jonson, a sophomore to be, finished in a tie for second at the 3A state tournament last May. He helped the Spartans finish second overall.
Also performing well was Anna Bourland.
She finished in a tie for second place at the state tournament with Colbert’s Savana Bezdicek. Both shot a three-day total of 238.
Bourland’s started off with a 84, but improved her game and worked past challenging pin placements and fast greens to shoot a two-over 75 on the last day.
She made it by winning the District 3 tournament in Dupont by shooting a two-day total of 162.
Bourland also took part in the 53rd annual PNGA Junior Girls Amateur Championship at the Longview Country Club in Longview last week.
She defeated Catherina Li of Kent 3 and 1, but lost to eventual finalist Stacey Blunt of Federal Way 3 and 1 in match play.
She finished sixth overall in stroke play qualifying with an 80.
Bourland, a junior to be, was instrumental in helping the Spartans golf team repeat as fourth-place finishers at the 3A state tournament last May. She finished in a tie for ninth in the individual portion.
Several other golfers also had solid finishes at districts and state.
Kyle Hurt finished in a four way tie for eighth place in the boys’ 16-17 year-old division at the state tournament as he shot a three-day total of 223. Hurt took fifth at the district tournament with a two-day total of 148.
Davis Harrison just missed the cut in the boys’ 14-15 year-old division at the state tournament with a two-day total of 157. He took ninth at the district tournament with a two-day total of 162.
Rusty Furth also missed the cut at state with a two-day total of 160. He finished 11th at the district tournament with a two-day total of 165.
William Whealdon missed the cut in the boys’ 12-13 year-old age division, finishing with a two-day total of 159. He did win the long drive contest for the 12-13 year-old age division with a 242-yard drive. He took second at the district tournament with a two-day total of 155.
Sam Warkentin finished fifth overall in the boys’ 8-11 age division with a three-day score of 170. Carter Kraus finished seventh overall with a three-day score of 172.
Kraus finished in a tie for fifth overall at the district tournament with a two-day total of 87, while Warkentin was seventh with a two day total of 91.
Those who missed the cut at districts in the boys’ 14-15 year-old age division were Kyle Leonard with a two-day total of 167, while Cameron Engstrom shot a two-day total of 169.
Kris Thompson shot a two-day total of 174 while Collin Lea shot a two-day total of 178.
In the boys’ 12-13 year-old age division, Andy Jonson was the second alternate with a two-day score of 179.

Come support Golden Eagles
The Bainbridge Island Golden Eagles are hosting a McTakeover Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. to help acquire new track equipment and additional uniforms.
The team is part of the Special Olympics of Washington State. The Bainbridge Island Golden Eagles offer sports training and competition at no charge for all developmentally disabled people from age 8 and up.
The coaches and volunteers give of their time to help athletes perform their best as well as to have fun.
“For us the greatest joy we experience is an athlete overcoming his or her obstacles and having fun at the same time” Coach Adam Kleiven says.
The team will also be selling coupon books which are good at all Kitsap Peninsula McDonalds locations.
“The books really pay for themselves after the first couple uses,” Kleiven said. “Our team will receive 40 percent of sales the night of the McTakeover as well as 40 percent of coupon book sales.
“I urge everybody to come out and support our team.”
