The Spartans wasted no time in showing arch-rival Lakeside who remains the rightful heir to the state crown in girls lacrosse.
Bainbridge Island scored in the first nine seconds of the game Monday and had the Lions completely caged before the end of the first half in a convincing 14-8 win.
“We are the defending state champs, and we wanted to show that to the home crowd,” said Bainbridge captain Kelsey Mackin.
Led by Mackin, the Spartans were not done in the first half as they scored three more goals in a span of just two minutes.
The Bainbridge offense scorched the Lakeside net with 10 goals in the first half and with 22 minutes gone in the first half, the Spartan defense kept the undefeated Lakeside team to just three goals.
“It was an end-line-to-end-line game,” said Mackin. “And the D definitely had our back.”
In the final three minutes, Lakeside made a little run and scored two late goals, and by half time the Spartans were up 10-5.
The second half started with the Kelsey Mackin Show as the speedy senior scored the first three goals for the Spartans and gave the team a 13-5 lead by 10 minutes into to second half.
“(Mackin) is captain who is very poised and has control of her game,” said head coach Tami Tommila. “She has energy and makes everyone else feed off that.”
Mackin finished with a game-high seven goals — half of the Spartan offense.
In the final 10 minutes of play, Lakeside seemed to pick up their defense and allowed the Spartans just one more goal. The Lions tossed in three more goals in their first loss of the season.
The Spartans have quite a history against Lakeside. The two teams faced each other last season for the state final, with BHS coming out on top.
In the past eight seasons, the rivals have faced each other for the title, and the past 10 seasons have seen the state title go to either Bainbridge or Lakeside.
The Spartans started off their first regular-season matchup ready to play, going up 7-2 with 11 minutes left in the first half.
“We executed our game plan,” Tommila said.
“But we had to stall in the last two minutes. It is hard to do that, but we had to,” she said.
That said, the lopsided win was no measure of the talent on the Lakeside team.
“They have a great coach and they frustrated us in the second half. If we played them tomorrow it would definitely be a different game,” Tommila said.
Along with Mackin’s seven goals, Olivia Smith added three goals and Theo Fehsenfeld scored two and had three assists.
Tommila said she was most proud that her team didn’t get one yellow card.
Coming off the big win, the Spartans faced Seattle Prep on Wednesday.
The Spartans pounded the Panthers, scoring 22 goals and allowing just seven.
Mackin picked up where she left off against Lakeside and scored six goals and added two assists against Seattle Prep. Smith added five goals and Fehsenfeld scored four.
