“The BHS boys’ lacrosse team defeated Eastside on Wednesday to qualify for tonight’s state championship game against Mercer Island.But there was some anxious fourth-quarter quivering among the home crowd before Bainbridge hung on for an 11-8 win. I was surprised at how close the game was, said coach Ryan Painter. I think we got a little complacent in the second half.It would have been nice to ride some momentum into Saturday. But I’m not too worried. I think we match up well.Wednesday against Eastside, ahead 7-1 at the half and 10-3 late in the third quarter, the Spartans went scoreless for more than 14 minutes before a last-minute goal sealed the victory in the team’s farewell home appearance this season.The game began as if it would be Bainbridge’s night, as Jesse Fairbank scooped up the opening draw and passed to Adam Smith for a score just seven seconds after the opening whistle.The team peppered the Eastside goal with five more shots in the next two minutes, but couldn’t add to the lead.Living dangerously, the Lakeside goalie ventured nearly to midfield with the ball halfway through the quarter, only to have it knocked away by Erik Steinecker. Smith scooped up the loose ball and fired it into the empty net from more than 30 yards out. Two and a half minutes later, Spartan Jacob Hayashi fed Ross Maloney from behind the net for an easy goal. Within a minute, defenseman Peter Bonoff intercepted a pass and flipped a long strike to Maloney for a shot that glanced off the goalie’s stick into the net for a 4-0 lead. And when Smith passed to Hayashi for a goal at 0:37, it appeared that the rout was on.Even when the visitors scored at 7:02 of the second quarter, no one was concerned, with Bainbridge having defeated Eastside 9-2 and 11-3 during the regular season. Hayashi tallied twice more, the second at 3:54 a nice bit of stickwork as he double-pumped, stepped to his right and fired the ball into the goal for a seemingly safe 7-1 halftime lead.Smith put himself into the state lacrosse record book as the first player to score 100 points (combining goals and assists) when he rebounded a shot that bounced off the goal post at 8:16 of the third quarter to extend the Bainbridge lead to 8-1.Eastside scored twice to close to within 8-3, but Hayashi picked up a missed shot off the goalie’s stick at 4:09 for his fourth goal and Smith tallied again at 3:11 when Michael Elliott threaded a pass to him standing so close to the goal that the ball had to travel less than a foot. Eastside closed out third quarter scoring at 0:38 with a rebound goal, then scored emphatically with two minutes gone in the fourth quarter as both defenseman Dylan Preble and goalie Charlie Delius were flattened in a melee at the net. They scored again in less than 30 seconds to narrow the margin to 10-6 and provide themselves with momentum. An interception and solo run within two minutes made it 10-7. With their goalie making five fourth-quarter saves, Eastside scored yet again at 3:52 to make the score 10-8 and had several subsequent scoring chances that narrowly misfired.But Bainbridge fans could finally breathe easily when the Eastside goalie misjudged Smith’s pass to Steinecker and it bounced past him as he lunged for it. Steinecker had only to nudge the ball into the goal to ice the game at :54.The championship game begins at 6 p.m. at Mercer Island Stadium, as Bainbridge goes for its eighth state title in a row.Bonoff, Elliott honoredBainbridge defenseman Peter Bonoff was one of three players in Washington named to the prep All-American team, while teammate Mike Elliott was tabbed for academic All-American honors. “
