Senior breaks Whitney Cheng’s record, repeats as Metro champ.

Grace Porter made history Tuesday – much to her relief.

“We had a lot of cancellations (this season) because of bad weather, so I was getting a little nervous about not getting the record this year,” she said. “But we got enough matches in.”

The senior co-captain, along with long-time doubles partner Kate Jameson, dispatched the doubles team of Megan Hodge and Mary Zamojski from Lakeside 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals of the Metro League tennis tournament for her 89th career win. It breaks the school record of 88 set by 2005 graduate and state finalist Whitney Cheng.

“It’s exciting,” Porter said. “It was kind of a relief to get it, but now I’m kind of nervous for anyone to break it so I want to get more matches (in).”

Porter and Jameson went on to beat Claire McReynolds and Kate Magee of Seattle Prep in the semifinals and Barbara Ann Carey and Sarah Newman in the finals to repeat as Metro girls’ doubles champions.

The boys’ doubles team of brothers Matt and Scott Alderson won the boys’ doubles championship with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 win over twins Drew and Evan Beckman from Seattle Prep.

Sasha Carter was the only other player to have a shot at a Metro title, but she lost in the finals to rival Natalie Allen of Holy Names.

All five qualify for districts along with Jordan Ferguson and Kelly Zwicker in girls’ singles, Jacob Christensen, Keet Curtis and Jack Pendleton in boys singles and Sam Claney/Mark Scott and Michael Bock/Ryan Bieber in boys doubles. The top three seeds will get a bye to the quarterfinals which means Carter, Ferguson, Christensen, Porter/Jameson and the Alderson brothers will get byes.

In all, 14 are going to the tournament, the most out of any Metro League school and the most head coach Mike Anderson has taken to the district tournament.

“We have the max in three of the four (divisions) which is unprecedented,” he said. “Usually its Seattle Prep or Lakeside that has the most kids going. So that’s pretty cool.”

The 3A Sea-King District tournament is May 17 and 18 at the Woodland Courts in Seattle.

Several other teams are working their way through the playoffs:

Boys’ Soccer: The Bainbridge boys’ soccer team is heading back to the 3A state tournament.

To get there, they blew out Sound Division champion Ingraham 6-1 Wednesday night in a Metro League tournament semifinal game.

Taylor Raquer scored two goals while Michael Crawley scored a goal and had two assists and Peter Fawley – who plays on the junior varsity team – had a goal and an assist.

Bainbridge plays Lakeside at 7 p.m. Friday at Interbay Stadium for the Metro League championship and to determine seeding.

Fastpitch: The Bainbridge fastpitch team had its Metro League tournament home game against Chief Sealth rained out on Wednesday.

They made it up as part of a doubleheader Thursday at Lower Woodland, but results were not available at playoff time.

If they won both games, they would play for the Metro League title at 4 p.m. Friday at Lower Woodland.

Track: Brad Wilmot and Isabel Ferguson qualified for the district meet thanks to their performance at the Metro League meet Wednesday at the Southwest Athletic Complex in Seattle.

Wilmot took fifth in the triple jump while Ferguson took fifth in the high jump.

The league meet concludes Friday.

Girls’ Lacrosse: The Bainbridge girls’ lacrosse team took the top seed into the playoffs with an 18-8 win over Issaquah May 6.

They played Seattle Prep in a first round game Thursday, but results were not available.

If they won, they host the winner of the Lake Sammamish/Issaquah game May 17.
