” Mike Roe placed sixth in Mat Classic XIII, and only a questionable referee’s decision prevented teammate Brandon Nall from at least equaling that feat.Roe scored a pair of overtime wins in his first two matches on Friday, before losing a technical fall Saturday morning to the eventual champion in his 145-pound division. Though he lost twice more on Saturday, he still became the first Spartan to medal at the Washington state wrestling tournament since Tyler Carner and Chris Shipp three years ago, and ended the season with a fine 28-10 overall mark.Nall also won his opening match and appeared to win his second match as well on a takedown just before the buzzer, only to learn moments later that his opponent had been awarded two points for a takedown that was marginal at best.He shot in on me and I was sitting on my butt, Nall said, but I had his crotch locked up and it wasn’t a takedown. Then I threw him.Unfortunately, the official saw it otherwise and Nall was on the short end of a 9-8 decision rather than winning 8-7. A loss later that evening eliminated him from the tournament.I was really proud of the kids, said coach Steve Hohl. They came out of regionals as no. 4 seeds and each of them knocked off a no. 1 seed at state. It was great that both were in the medal hunt.Both of Roe’s wins were overtime decisions.In his opening match, he scored a first-round takedown, gave up a second-round reversal, and each wrestler had an escape to knot the score at 3-3 at the end of regulation time. A takedown in overtime gave Roe a 5-3 win.In the second match, Roe was taken down in the first round. Beginning in the down position in the second round, he couldn’t score. He fell behind 3-0 in the third round as he gave up an escape, but shortly afterward scored a takedown. With less than 30 seconds remaining, he gave up a deliberate escape to trail 4-2 but scored a takedown at the buzzer to equalize the match. His subsequent takedown early in overtime pushed him into the semis.It’s all about endurance, he said as he left the mat. I surprised myself by getting this far. Starting down in the second round, he scored a reversal but when his rival reversed back, the round ended with a 6-6 tie. His opponent escaped late in the third round to take a 7-6 lead, then came the crucial final few moments.Had he won the match, he would have faced eventual champion Anthony Haukenberry of White River, whom he wrestled three times previously this year. Though Haukenberry won all three, twice his victories were by two points and Nall hoped to prevail in a fourth matchup. But it was not to be, and Nall finished his season 23-9. “
