The Spartans baseball squad is currently 6-5 and right in the middle of the standings, but the outcome of their season will rest heavily on the next week as the Spartans play what head coach David Smart calls an insane amount of games.

“We have a murderers’ row of games coming up,” he said.

The Spartans are scheduled to play on Friday and next week play a game every day, Monday through Friday.

To make things tougher for the Spartans, of the six games, four are against the top two teams in the league; Eastside Catholic and Seattle Prep.

Seattle Prep is currently undefeated and Eastside Catholic is 9-3.

“Our destiny is in our own hands,” Smart said. “If we can get some (wins) we can get into the playoffs.”

As of late the Spartans have been relying heavily on their pitching. Junior Will Houser and Sophomore Dylan Vchulek have led the way on the mound for the Spartans.

“We have the opportunity to throw a great game any day, and that has kept us in it,” said Smart.

The Spartans have been up and down all season and their biggest problem has been their bats, and being able to get the big hit with runners in scoring position.

On Monday, against Franklin both the pitching and the hitting was good.

BHS managed to give Houser more than enough run support as they scored 10 runs and Houser gave up just a run.

On Tuesday against Chief Sealth, the top team in their division BHS and the Seahawks scored early.

But like in previous games, the Spartans were unable to execute.

“We left too many guys on base,” said Smart. “We couldn’t capitalize when we had the opportunities.”

The Spartans began their long stretch of games at Seattle Prep on Friday, and then play two more away games before closing out the week with three straight home games.

“We will have to pitch well, and I am counting on that,”  Smart said. “We will go from there but I know we will have to manufacture runs when we get the opportunity.”
