A turnover-filled first half by the Spartans gave the Panthers the edge they needed to outlast Bainbridge 48-33 in Metro League girls basketball Friday.

It was a frustrating night for Bainbridge at home.

Seattle Prep’s defensive vice began to tighten soon after the opening tipoff, as Bainbridge connected on just 3-of-9 shots in the first quarter.

On the other end, Seattle Prep got plenty of looks at the basket.

That said, the Spartan defense pushed Prep to a perimeter game and many of Panthers’ shots were off the mark.

Prep went 4-of-14 from the field, and was 1-of-6 from behind the three-point arc.

The Panthers led 10-8 at the end of the first quarter, and came out firing again in the second.

Bainbridge attempted only four shots in the second quarter. Prep, however, put up 21 shots, and connected on six, to enter the half with a 23-15 advantage.

The Panthers were paced by Mary Ann Santucci’s 11 first-half points, while Grace Kenyon and Julie Feikes combined for eight points in the half to keep Bainbridge in the contest.

Santucci, a junior guard for Prep, continued to spark the Panthers in the second half. She added another nine points in the second half as Prep outscored Bainbridge 15-5 in the third.

The Spartans hit just 2-of-5 in the quarter, but bounced back in the fourth on 6-of-13 shooting, including a three-pointer by Kenyon.

It wasn’t enough, as the Panthers snapped the Spartans’ four-game winning streak with the sloppy, choppy victory.

Kenyon and Katie Usellis led Bainbridge with seven points each. Feikes added six, and Sydney Severson contributed five.

The Spartans’ Kayla Buchmeier contributed four points, while Maddie Ketcheside and Paige Brigham added two points each.

Santuchi led all scorers with 20 points.

The Spartans hit the road Monday for another Metro League contest. Bainbridge (5-3 Metro, 8-4 overall) will play West Seattle (3-3, 7-4) Jan. 14 in Seattle.

West Seattle beat Bainbridge by one point, 43-42, earlier this season on the Spartans’ home court.
