Seven members of the Bainbridge High School varsity wrestling team – three boys and four girls – will advance to the Regional tournament after having placed in the top 10 of their respective weight brackets at the 2020 Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Sub-Regional Tournament in Seattle Feb. 8.
Overall, Bainbridge finished fifth out of 33 teams with a score of 90.
Everett claimed the top spot (152), Chief Sealth second place (138) and Redmond third (124).
Also in attendance were wrestlers from Snohomish, Marysville-Pilchuck, Cedarcrest, Lakeside, Edmonds-Woodway, Nathan Hale, North Creek, Newport, Garfield, Ballard, Mt. Si, Meadowdale, Rainier Beach, Seattle Academy, Sammamish and Skyline, among others.
The best Spartan showing of the day was BHS junior Caroline Michaels, who claimed the first-place spot in the 145-pound bracket.
Fellow junior Katie Irvin took second in the 155-pound bracket, senior team captain Sagel Bush finished third in the 135-pound division, and sophomore Aubrie Auckland managed fourth place in the 140-pound bracket.
Among the boys, the best performance was veteran junior Garrett Swanson’s second place finish in the 106-pound bracket.
Sophomore Levi Field- Bennett and freshman Quentin Ikuse both finished seventh, in the 126- and 132-pound brackets, respectively.
The Regional tournament will be held at Eastside Catholic High School Saturday, Feb. 15.
The Mat Classic XXXII state championship will be held Friday, Feb. 21 and Saturday, Feb. 22 at the Tacoma Dome.
