Just one member of the Bainbridge High varsity gymnastics squad made it to the event finals at the 2017 Washington Interscholastic Activities Association 2A/3A State Tournament last week at the Tacoma Dome.
Remi Rosencrans advanced through Day One’s individual events to compete again in vault and bars Friday, but a nagging ankle injury earned the day before promptly whittled her scope further and forced her to scratch in the first event. On the bars she finished in sixth place overall, tied with Sehome’s Jordyn Correll, with a score of 9.275.
She’d finished in the top 15 in both events at the close of Day One, with a score of 8.950 for 11th in bars and 8.925 for 15th in vault.
“We were pleased with Remi’s bar routine,” said BHS Head Coach Cindy Guy. “It was a great score and we are happy she placed and received a medal.
“She has a high scoring vault,” Guy added. “[But] we felt it was not worth an injury to risk her vaulting.”
BHS had advanced five gymnasts to the tournament from the recent district championships: Rosencrans, Mariko Ronan, Kareese Pippinger, Keagan Daniel and Morgan Derickx.
Vault proved the team’s biggest points earner. All the Spartans finished in the top 60 in that event.
Derickx claimed the 21st place with a score of 8.675. Daniel tied for 25th (8.6), Ronan tied for 49th (8.15) and Pippinger snagged 58th as part of a four-way tie, with a final score of 8.0.
On the bars, Derickx finished in 24th place (8.0).
Only two Spartans competed in the floor event. Ronan tied for 29th place overall with a final score of 9.15, and Rosencrans finished in 53rd place (8.625).
It was, Guy said, the team’s most challenging event.
“The top girls were better this year on all but floor,” she said. “We knew a 9.35-9.4 would be what you needed on floor.”
At the close of Day One, Ronan earned 25th place in the all-around rankings with a score of 33.95.
Guy said the season was a definite success.
“The state meet was tough,” she explained. “Most of the finalist came from our district. Getting to state was a great accomplishment. We were well prepared to compete at the state level.”
Guy said the team did well overall, especially considering the youth of the squad, which made her very enthusiastic about the future.
“Although we are a young team this year, we were close to achieving our goals,” she said. “We are looking forward to next season. The girls are excited to prepare new skills.”
