Spartan boys 16th in huge cross country meet

Bainbridge junior Ben Crandall placed 31st at the huge Hole-in-the-Wall cross-country race at Lakewood Oct. 12, leading his team to a 16th place finish.

His time was 15 minutes, 32 seconds, which places him second on the school’s all-time record list. The event featured 133 teams from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Alaska and British Columbia.

The two-loop, 5-kilometer races featured 150 to over 400 runners surging over a mixed course of grass fields, gravel, rubberized track, wooded trails and pavement.

Close behind Crandall were sophomore Ryan Dodge, junior Ignacio Llorens, seniors Marcus Stroman and Kellen Diercks, sophomore Miles Fuss and junior Hawkeye Grumm.

The girls team was tightly packed within 55 seconds of each other with senior Mairin O’Brien, sophomore Evelyn Shutske, juniors Kaitlyn Davis and Savai Esarey, and senior Cara Brundige.

Junior Nova Sheppard fought back from an early race collision, closing the gap with teammates to five seconds.
