Spartan girls dash Kingston hoop hopes 48-47 in post holiday fracas

The Bainbridge High varsity girls basketball team squeaked to their fifth win of the year Thursday, Dec. 28, at home against fellow Kitsap hoopsters from Kingston High.

The final score was 48-47, and the win — their first after two successive losses — nudged the Spartans’ overall season record to an even 5-5 (2-3 in conference). They hold the third-place spot in the Metro standings, behind Seattle Prep (first, 5-0) and Bishop Blanchet (second, 3-2), and ahead of Lakeside (fourth, 1-4).

The island squad will next play at home at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5 against Ballard.

Spartan sophomore Olivia Wikstrom led the team’s scoring efforts, racking up 16 by the night’s end. She went 9-for-9 in free throws, managed to sink one of seven three-pointers and also chalked up two assists.

Team cocaptain Grace Carson ended the game with 13 points scored. She went 9-for-10 in free-throw attempts, further cementing the team’s well-earned reputation as top-notch free-throw shooters.

Fellow cocaptain Morgan Lassoff scored nine points against the Buccaneers, including three of the five three-pointers she attempted.

Feisty frosh Anna Kozlosky scored her way to inclusion among the night’s top performers as well, finishing the nonconference matchup with eight points to her credit. She went 1-for-3 in three-pointers and 3-for-5 in free throws.
