” The Bainbridge Spartan junior-varsity football team members may have thought they were looking in a mirror Monday as the Chimacum Cowboys took the field. The visiting team had mistakenly brought their home dark uniforms, and were forced to borrow the Bainbridge High School gold visitors’ togs for play. But the Spartan name emblazoned across the jerseys on both sides of scrimmage was about the only similarity between the opponents, as Bainbridge romped to a 47-19 victory. The victory pushed the Spartan JV record to a perfect 2-0 after last week’s 7-6 squeaker over Port Angeles. Bainbridge dominated both sides of the field for the duration Monday, with Chimacum staying close only for the first few minutes of the opening quarter. Taking advantage of a Cowboy fumble near midfield, the Spartans quickly capitalized with a 41-yard touchdown strike from Kevan Neill to Seth Jacobson. Chimacum battled back and, despite a valiant Spartan goal-line defensive stand, knotted the tally at 7-7 on a 3-yard TD pass and extra point. The first quarter, however, was not over for the Bainbridge side. Spencer Evans broke the Spartans out of the midfield with a big run ending on the Chimacum 6-yard line. A couple of plays later, Liam Maher pounded over the right side, behind the tough Bainbridge line. The PAT missed, but Bainbridge held the lead for good at 13-7. Spartan coach Jake Haley was quick to praise the strength of the Bainbridge offensive line. Our offensive line was just dominating, Haley said. You have to give those guys the credit. Michael Wauters broke up a Cowboy drive midway through the second quarter with an interception in the corner of the endzone, while the Chimacum defense returned the favor a couple of minutes later stifling a Spartan drive with a touchback interception of its own. Evans turned the tables on the visitors again near the end of the half with an interception at midfield. Moments later, Evans finished what he started by slipping across the field and the goal line on a effective counter. The second half started much like the beginning of the game with the teams trading possessions. Tony Mirkovich broke things open with a midfield interception and tough return, bringing the ball down to the Cowboy 5-yard line. The next play saw Byron Masi bang across to paydirt. Chimacum finally put together a complete drive, using effective sweeps and passes into the flat, to score on an 8-yard pass play near the end of the third quarter. The Cowboy whooping and hollering was silenced on the ensuing kickoff.Spartan return specialist David Underwood had threatened to break one all afternoon. This time, the threats were realized as Underwood dodged and juked his way through the Chimacum kickoff team for an 80-yard touchdown run. The final Spartan scores in the fourth quarter came on a 14-yard run by Matt Dubitsky and a 3-yard blast by receiver-turned-running back Amon Bellesen. Bainbridge coach Mike Roe said the game showed a little of what Spartan football fans have to look forward to in the next few years. This is a good JV group, Roe said. It looks like they’ll be strong in the next two or three years (for the varsity). They’re starting to figure it out. The Bainbridge junior varsity will put its perfect record on the line next Monday afternoon against Sequim. The following Monday, the Sparts host Klahowya with the same 5 p.m. start. The Oct. 9 matchup will feature a contest at Gig Harbor, whose varsity is a perennial state powerhouse. That (Gig Harbor contest) will be a whole different kind of game, Roe said. In other Bainbridge grid action this week, the Spartan freshman team travels to Seattle Prep Thursday for a 3:30 p.m. game, and the varsity looks for its first win Friday night as the Yelm Tornadoes blow into town for a 7 p.m. start. “
