BAINBRIDGE – Maddie Loverich erased any thoughts of a comeback by Eastside Catholic as the Spartan catcher hit a grand slam home run last week in Bainbridge’s win Wednesday in girls varsity fastpitch softball.
Bainbridge blanked EC 14-0 in the contest, which was called early — but a little belatedly — due to the ample BHS offense.
The Spartans capitalized on the Crusaders’ troubles at pitching. Bainbridge reached base 14 times on walks and twice by hit batter during the game.
The Spartans jumped to a 5-0 lead at the bottom of the second and things got even more out of whack after a scoreless top-of-the-third.
After the score reached 19-0 in the bottom of the third, the umpire asked if there wasn’t a 15-run rule after three innings.
The coaches recalled that the rule had just been reinstated this year, thus the game ended with a slightly higher score than it should have been.
Loverich finished on 3-of-4 batting, and had a double to go with her grand slam. She had seven RBIs and three runs.
Georgia Wood was 2-for-2 for Bainbridge, with an RBI and two runs. Kensey Baker went 1-for-2, with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Also scoring for the Spartans: Ruby Raymundo (1-for-1, two BB, RBI, three runs), Olivia Ditmore (0-for-1, two BBs, two RBIs, three runs) and Morgan Lasoff (0-0, four BBs, two RBIs, two runs).
Spartan hurler Malia Peato picked up her third win on the season (3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 5 Ks, 0 BB).
