After losing their first game and tying Mercer Island, the Bainbridge Island girls lacrosse team got on the right track with a 16-6 win over Bellevue East on Wednesday.

“The last games were learning lessons for us, and today we got to sort of correct the wrongs, and I think we just adjusted better,” said head Coach Tami Tommila.

On a cold night on Bainbridge, the Spartans got off to a hot start, scoring what seemed like nearly every minute and jumping off to a 9-1 start with still six-and-a-half to play in the first half.

Bellevue East had played Mercer East a few days before and lost by just one, so stat-wise, Bellevue appeared to be just as good as Mercer. The Spartans were able to dominate in the game, however, and the victory never was in doubt.

The Spartans slowed down a bit in the second half, scoring just five goals, but with the large lead at half the Spartans still finished with a convincing 16-6 win.

“This is just our third game, and I think every game is going to be an improvement,” said Bainbridge senior Bee Sheffer.

Kelsey Mackin and Olivia Smith led the way for the Spartans, Mackin scored five goals and had two assists and Smith scored six and added one assist.

The Spartans are now 1-1-1 and on Monday face their rival Lakeside.

BHS and Lakeside have faced each other in the state finals for eight consecutive years, and currently Lakeside has yet to lose this season.

Though the Rangers played well, both Tommila and Sheffer agree there is always room for improvement.

Tommila said the Spartans didn’t finish as well in the second half and against a team like Lakeside they’ll need to play a complete game.

The much-anticipated match against Lakeside starts under the lights at Bainbridge High School at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Tennis

After Seattle Prep just edged out the BHS tennis team 5-6 on Monday, the Spartans bounced back and blanked Eastside Catholic 11-0 on Tuesday.

Matt Alderson and Kate Jameson came away with easy wins.

The Bainbridge boys double team of Keet Curtis and Ben DeVries shut out their opponents, 6-0, 6-0.

The tennis team plays an indoor match against Lindbergh on Saturday and faces West Seattle at home Monday.

Fastpitch

After a five-inning, crushing 24-0 win over Rainier Beach to start the season Monday, the Spartans softball team won their second straight game of the season against Blanchet 7-1 on Wednesday.

The Spartans were led by a near-perfect pitching performance by Kelly Raben.

Raben threw a no-hitter and gave up an unearned run on two walks.

The Spartans host Blanchet on March 23 then travel to Ingraham Monday.

Boys soccer

The Bainbridge boys soccer team remains undefeated after beating up on Nathan Hale, 8-0.

The shutout was followed by a win against Kingston, 2-0, the following day, and the Spartans didn’t allow a goal for the third straight game as they ended in a 0-0 draw against O’Dea Tuesday.

The soccer team will continue the quest for an undefeated season Saturday against their neighbors, North Kitsap.

Boys lacrosse

The boys lacrosse team won their second straight game of the season and improved to 2-2 overall with a 17-7 win over Tahoma Wednesday.

Kaegan Ingrasci, Jake Knostman and Jason Ashton each scored three in the victory.

Head coach Jack Visco said the team is improving every game, but still needs to improve defensively on manning up.
