Of course, the Bainbridge boys varsity water polo team win more than they lose — especially lately.

The squad hosted two home matches Saturday, first against South Kitsap (which they won) and the second against Newport (which they lost).

Still, it was a glass half-full kind of day for the Spartans who, with their first victory, assured a promising start to the postseason.

“Saturday morning we beat South Kitsap 20-5 to put our League record at 6-4 and clinch third place as well as a berth to Regionals,” Spartan Head Coach Jacob Millican said. “We ended up losing to Newport 9-6, but I was very pleased with how the boys played in both games.”

The team has continued to improve, Millican said, since they seemed to experience a group breakthrough mid-match several weeks ago.

“They came out playing hard [Saturday] and showed much greater poise, as they have definitely matured together as a group,” he explained. “We also have the benefit of a deep bench with a lot of athletes that play solid defense, allowing our top players to comfortably take a breather as necessary.”

“I’m looking forward to what this group can do going into regionals,” he added.

Region 1 District Playoffs begin Friday and continue through Sunday, Nov. 8.

The state tournament is slated to begin the following weekend.
