After claiming their biggest win so far this season over ninth-ranked O’Dea, the Bainbridge boys basketball team is taking a well-deserved three-week break from Metro League play – and a trip to Disneyland.
Bainbridge, currently ranked 10th in the state, is the fourth Metro League to make the top 10. Rainier Beach remains at No. 1 while Seattle Prep and O’Dea are ranked fifth and ninth, respectively.
The Spartans, who won 62-49 at O’Dea, shot 45 percent from the floor and only committed 15 turnovers.
DiIorio posted a team- and season-high 28 points and Ryan Burris added 17 points.
“It’s nice that we finally were able to get Will and Ryan off on the same night,” head coach Steve Henderson said. “It’s been one or the other with those two, at least as far as scoring went.”
DiIorio, averaging 17.5 points per game, grabbed 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.
“Will kind of put us on his shoulders, so to say,” Henderson said.
Burris, who added 17 points, also poured in 11 rebounds, three assists and three blocks.
“Ryan didn’t shoot the ball exceptionally well,” Henderson said. “He did a lot of other things.”
The Spartans (3-1 in the Metro, 5-1 overall), led the Irish (4-2 in the Metro, 5-2 overall) 28-24 at the half.
Second-chance points made the difference in the second half, as the Spartans outscored the Irish 14-8 in the third quarter.
Offensively, the fourth quarter was the Spartans’ most productive. Bainbridge scored 20 points to O’Dea’s 17 to hold on to the lead.
“I felt like (the game) was definitely our best effort for four quarters,” Henderson said. “There were no lapses.”
Making the most of their break from the Metro, the Spartans will compete in San Diego’s Surf ‘N’ Slam tournament Dec. 28-30, but will make a stop at the “Magic Kingdom” first.
“They’re pretty excited,” Henderson said. “We’re making sure our legs are back, making sure we stay healthy down there. Once we get back, getting ready to go.”
When they return, the Spartans will have 11 conference games remaining, beginning with Seattle Prep Jan. 8.
The Spartans will also have a rematch with Metro-Sound rival Rainier Beach when they battle on Feb. 5 for the top spot in the division. In the teams’ first meeting on Dec. 11, the Spartans fell 63-40 at home.
“We’re not kind of flying under the radar like we were last year,” Henderson said. “Any win against a Metro team is a big win.
