After defeating the then-undefeated Holy Names Cougars 12-0 last week — a game in which Bainbridge head coach Liz McCloskey said was the best game thus far of the season for the Spartans — the Spartans had a home rematch on Friday.

Familiar foe, but almost a completely different story.

BHS starting pitcher Katie Raben had allowed just two total hits in the first meeting against the Cougars, but this time Holy Names had the hot start.

Sophomore outfielder Kelsy Lunasco drilled a two-run home run off Raben in the first and the Cougars would go on the score three more and take a 5-0 lead.

The Spartans had not been used to being down, in fact only one other time this season had they been down at all. Still, they didn’t panic.

“We knew there was a lot of game left,” McCloskey said.

In the bottom of the first the Spartans showed they had some power in their bats as well when Taylor Greenfield narrowed the gap for the Spartans and blasted a three-run homer.

“That showed we can hit this pitcher just like we did the first time,” McCloskey said.

Raben went back to her usual ways and shut down the Cougars in the second, and the Spartans evened the score in the bottom of the second at 5-5.

Each team scored in the third, and Raben blanked the Cougars in the fourth and fifth.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Spartans went off.

The game was even at 6-all until Bainbridge went on a hit parade and – with the help of a few Holy Names errors — the Spartans went on to score 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth and the 10-run rule came into effect and the Spartans would again be victorious, defeating the Cougars 16-6.

Greenfield went 3-for-4 in the game, and along with the big three-run dinger she also added a double and four RBIs.

Senior second baseman Hailey Willmann also had a big day at the plate for the Spartans as she also had three hits, including two doubles and six RBIs.

On Monday, BHS went back to their dominating ways as they defeated Franklin at home 16-0, again in just five innings. Raben got the day off the rubber and Alison Reichert started for the Spartans.

Reichert didn’t give up a run, allowed just two hits and in just five innings she struck out nine.

Greenfield continued where she left off, again delivering three hits for the Spartans and five RBIs.

Freshman Riley Gregoire was a perfect 2-for-2 and she scored three runs and drove in three runs.

The Spartans are 11-0 and will continue their quest for a perfect season against Seattle Prep on Friday, and then West Seattle on Wednesday.
