Spartans downed 1-0 by Blanchet in boys soccer defeat

Wayne Gretzky once said, “You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take.” That’s certainly true, but sometimes — times like the varsity boys soccer game against Bishop Blanchet last week — you miss 100 percent of the shots anyway.

Wayne Gretzky once said, “You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take.”

That’s certainly true, but sometimes — times like the varsity boys soccer game against Bishop Blanchet last week — you miss 100 percent of the shots anyway.

You just can’t win them all.

The Spartans tried, and managed to take plenty of shots, but just couldn’t get the ball in the goal during Friday’s 1-0 shutout loss to the Braves.

The loss left the BHS team with a 3-1-1 overall season record, following a 0-0 tie against Garfield earlier in the week. The squad is ranked in second place in the Metro Sound division, behind Blanchet (5-0, overall).

The game’s sole goal was scored by Blanchet’s Andrew Bates.

To hear Spartan Head Coach Ian McCallum tell it, the loss was a bit of history repeating itself.

“You’re never going to win every game during the regular season,” he said after the match. “It’s a little bit like the Blanchet game last year. They scored two early, and we pounded them and we just couldn’t score.”

Still, McCallum added, one must give credit where it’s due.

“Their keeper came up with some good saves,” he said of the visitors. “They defended, they kind of stalled in the second half. We finished the game with two defenders and four forwards, so we were going for it at the end.”

Go for it they did, but still the necessary goals eluded the home team. No mind.

“I’m proud of every player,” McCallum said. “I don’t know if it was just [it’s] that third game of the week after a long week, or [that] we just couldn’t get our breakthrough.”

The team’s next match is slated to be away against Franklin High at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 7.

The Spartans’ next home match is 6 p.m. Thursday, April 9 against Rainier Beach.
