“On a gloriously sunny afternoon that finally looked like spring, the Bainbridge track and field team came out of its burrow Thursday to best Sequim and Klahowya in the year’s only home meet. The Bainbridge girls tallied 89 points to Sequim’s second-place 52 and Klahowya’s 50. The Spartan boys totaled 76, with Klahowya scored 56 and Sequim 49. Junior sprinter Luke Preble led the way for the Spartan boys with a sweep of the sprints. Preble won the 100, 200 and 400 meter dash events, and anchored the Spartans’ winning 4×400 meter relay team. His 100-meter dash time (11 seconds) was good for this time of year, coach Richard Christopher said. And his 400 time (52.75 seconds) isn’t that far off his time at the end of last season.Freshman Laura Bartunek made an immediate impact, with a win in the high jump and a second in the triple jump, while brother Jeff scored points in the unusual tandem of the high jump and discus.Joey Mankes was another Bainbridge double winner, prevailing in both the high jump and triple jump. He added a second in the pole vault.Overall, I’m pleased, Christopher said. Our seasoned competitors did about what we would have expected, and the others got some experience. We have a ways to go, but there are not major things that are wrong.Unlike most other sports, the regular season events in track and field don’t make or break anyone. The sorting-out process that leads to the state meet begins with the league meet in early May.These meets are opportunities to see how the athletes deal with competition, Christopher said.Track and field is unusual in another aspect. As a practical matter, the home track is not an advantage but a huge disadvantage, because the home coaching staff has to run the meet itself. Christopher spent Thursday afternoon in the press box playing ringmaster, coordinating the events by walkie-talkie and directing traffic through the public-address system, leaving absolutely no opportunity for coaching. My main reaction after a home meet is being thankful that we got through it, he said, thanking volunteers staff and parents for their participation.Nobody is paid anything, he said, and we couldn’t have a meet without them.
