The Bainbridge Spartans displayed a shooting showcase against Port Angeles Sept. 28, winning 5-0.
It could have been much worse for the visiting Roughriders. The Spartans piled up over 15 shots and four corner kicks in the first half. However, only about half of the shots were on net, and Bainbridge led just 1-0 at intermission. BHS scored three times late in the game to make it look like a rout.
The first Spartan shot came from Riley Becker, who fired a free kick nearly over the goalie two minutes into the game.
Port Angeles responded with its one shot in the half a few minutes later. However, the Roughriders’ long shot hit the left side of the net for a goal kick.
Bainbridge’s next chance was Izzi Pujolar’s breakaway 10 minutes into the game. Yet, the defense trailed and stopped Pujolar from a clean look on the shot.
Avery Pujolar took a shot from the right side of the box 16 minutes into the game. When the ball deflected back to Pujolar, she assisted Becker’s goal that nailed the left corner to make it 1-0. Afterward, Becker had a few more opportunities that dribbled to the PA goalie.
The Spartan offense was not as dominant in the second half, even though they scored four goals.
Izzi Pujolar looked to cross the ball in the first few minutes of the second half. Instead, her shot trickled passed the goalie to double the score.
Becker found herself past the defense but failed to shoot the ball past the goalie. The save deflected out and forced the Spartans to fend off Port Angeles’ counterattack. Arden De Lanoy found a hole through the defense but her breakaway shot was saved, too.
Izzi Pujolar looked for her second goal with an opportunity against the goalie. Although the keeper guessed the wrong direction, Pujolar’s shot missed wide left. Riley Butler had a cross land at her feet at the 6-yard box. Yet, her shot landed wide left with 10 minutes left.
Butler, Avery Pujolar and Laine Romney all scored within the final 10 minutes on a handful of breakaways caused by through-ball passes.
