Spartans win the day in gymnastics

BAINBRIDGE – The Bainbridge Spartans won their home-opening meet in girls gymnastics late last week, prevailing against both Roosevelt and Chief Sealth.

BHS finished first with a score of 148.85.

Roosevelt followed with 137.4 and Chief Sealth was third, 108.7.

Bainbridge had multiple top-five finishers in multiple events.

Emma Chee won in bars and floor, while teammate Briana Bruyere was first on beam.

“They had a good meet,” said Spartan Coach Cindy Guy.

Scores and routines are improving, she said.

The team scored 140 in its first meet, and had set a goal of 142 for their home kickoff. The Spartans rolled past that by well over six points.

The Spartans are doing better on bars, Guy said, and staying on beam, mostly, though vault scores are down a bit, despite the girls throwing the same vaults.

There’s one obvious reason for the higher score overall: the rise in start values for the BHS gymnasts.

Credit the modifications made in the difficulty level of the Spartans’ routines.

“We were really pleased with the changes that we made in practice,” Guy said.

Last Friday’s meet found the team at less than full-strength. Guy noted the team had two gymnasts still on the mend; one from a sprained ankle and another from a back ailment.

Still, she was unfazed.

“We’re still feeling really good about how our season is going,” she said.

“We’re happy with how things are going and are looking forward to another meet.”

The Spartans claimed first places in most of the events at last week’s opener, although there were two exceptions.

Roosevelt’s Claire Schwartz (also the meet’s all-around champ) won the vault for the Rough Riders with a score of 9.

The Spartans followed in the next three spots; Chee was second (7.9), followed by Alathea Pippinger and Karena Klinkenberg (7.8).

On bars, Chee finished with 7 for first place.

Klinkenberg placed third (with a score of 6), with teammates Bruyere and Kylie Daniel just behind (5.9).

Pippinger earned a score of 5.5 for sixth place on bars. She also tied for second on beam with an 8.1.

First place, of course, went to Bruyere, who stepped to a score of 8.55.

Klinkenberg was fourth for Bainbridge in the event, with a 7.5 on beam.

Chee had her best score of the night — 9.1 — during her first-place showing on floor.

Pippinger and Klinkenberg also performed well, (each with 8.3), and just behind the pair in the scoring, fellow Spartans Daniel (fifth place, 8.2) and Bruyere (sixth, 8.1).

In all around, Chee placed second for Bainbridge (30.9), followed by Bruyere (30.15), Pippinger (29.7), Klinkenberg (29.6) and Daniel (28.2).
