Solstice Run set for Saturday
Runners and walkers of all levels of ability are invited to Saturday’s seventh annual Solstice Run.
The one-mile race begins at 9 a.m., with the 5K getting under way at 9:30.
The awards ceremony and kids’ dashes will be held following completion of the 5K.
The start and finish for both events will be at City Hall Park, next to BPA. The courses are similar to the Grand Old Fourth runs.

Solstice Run proceeds benefit Go Run!, an after-school running program for fifth- and sixth-grade girls.

Boys basketball splits
two games
The Bainbridge High boys’ basketball team split a pair of nail-biters on the road against ranked teams last week.
The Spartans lost their season opener to Central Kitsap 73-72 in overtime on Tuesday and knocked off Meadowdale 48-46 on Thursday on Will DiIorio’s put-back shot at the buzzer.
Central Kitsap was ranked No. 6 in Class 4A in the Seattle Times preseason poll, while Meadowdale held down the No. 9 slot in 3A.
Spartans coach Steve Henderson wasn’t surprised by his team’s performance.
“They’ve been working hard all preseason,” he said.
Things don’t get any easier this week. After opening the Metro League season last night by hosting Eastside Catholic, Bainbridge travels to Rainier Beach on Friday to take on the defending 3A state champions.
Some observers feel that the Vikings could be even stronger this year despite graduating four Division 1 recruits.
Ben Eisenhardt and DiIorio each scored 17 points to pace the Spartans against Central Kitsap. Ryan Burris added 15 and Paul Weese had 14.
The balanced scoring continued against Meadowdale as Eisenhardt, Burris and Weese all had 10 points, while DiIorio and David Korsak both added eight points.
BHS GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Girls open at home tonight
After thumping Olympic 55-35 in its season opener on Tuesday, the BHS girls’ basketball team lost at Mercer Island 81-77 three days later.
The Spartans were up by four points with a minute left but couldn’t hold the lead.
“They were out to get us,” said coach Penny Gienger. “We couldn’t stop their three-point shots and they couldn’t stop our twos. It was disappointing that we lost. But we were down by 10 and came back so I wasn’t disappointed in the game.
“We didn’t know much about them so we were making adjustments on the fly. The result would be different if we played them again.”
Bainbridge had four players in double figures, led by Brittany Gray’s 27 points.
Kirsten Michael scored 17 and Anna Wood and Jesse Vincent both had 14.
Against Olympic, Gray finished with 25 points after a somewhat shaky start. Wood added 14.
The Spartans open Metro League play against Eastside Catholic today at 7:30 p.m., and travel to Rainier Beach on Friday.
BHS Boys’ SWIMMING
BHS swimmers dominate Blanchet
Led by David Ortyn’s state-qualifying time of 54.90 seconds in the 100 yard fly, the Bainbridge High boys’ swim team swamped Blanchet 105-65 last Friday as it won every race except the 50 free.
The Spartans also had 12 district-qualifying swims in individual events.
Colin Chupik (2:07.36 in 200 IM and 52.23 in 100 free) and Zak Gosney (5:12.14 in 500 free and 1:04.92 in 100 back) were double-event winners.
Jeff Yalung (1:10.17 in 100 breast) and Andrew McCarthy (1:54.69 in 200 free) won their respective events.
McCarthy also nearly won twice, finishing second in the 50 free by 15-hundredths of a second.
The team played host to Issaquah yesterday and faces O’Dea on Friday at 3:30 p.m. at the Ray Williamson Pool.
