Dunaway is off to UW in 2008

Another BHS athlete has made an early commitment to continue their athletic career.

Kelcey Dunaway, a standout player for the volleyball team, made a verbal commitment to the University of Washington to play for them when she graduates.

She’s the third player from the team to commit to a Division I university.

Head coach Julie Miller said she’s happy for Dunaway and her future plans.

“She’s worked really hard and that’s what’s exciting for me is that hard work is paying off for her,” she said.

It’s the earliest anyone has ever committed to a university in Miller’s tenure as the coach.

The junior said she committed to UW over several other schools because she felt “comfortable in Seattle.”

“I really love the coaches and the team and the tradition,” she said. “They have a great program that helps you get through the trials of being a student athlete.”

Dunaway, who has been the starting middle blocker for two years for Bainbridge, said she didn’t fret about making a quick selection just to get it out of the way before her senior year.

“I never felt I needed to commit (to a college) right away,” she said. “I never felt pressure to say, ‘oh, I need to pick a school.’

“It feels really good.”

Dunaway was a All-Metro Mountain Division first team selection last season.

She was a second team selection as a sophomore.

BIYSC hosts former coach

The Bainbridge Island Youth Soccer Club will hold a special coaching clinic this Saturday featuring former U.S. World Cup and Men’s National team head coach Steve Sampson.

The clinic will be held at Memorial Stadium and is free to all registered BIYSC coaches.

All other WSYSA registered coaches can attend and are asked to support BIYSC’s “Fields for our Future” program by offering a $20 donation.

Sampson is a former college All-American and was an assistant to Bora Milutinovic in the 1994 World Cup, which the U.S. hosted, and took over as head coach of the U.S. Men’s National team leading them to the World Cup finals in France in 1998.

On Sunday BIYSC will hold their annual pre-tryout kick around “Kick off the Cobwebs.” All interested players are invited to Battle Point Park for a pre-tryout warm up practice session.

Players 12 years old and under are invited to play in a small sided format from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., while players 13 years old and above are invited to play from 11 a.m. to noon.
