The fourth place showing is the team’s highest ever, earning a trophy for the case.

The Bainbridge girls’ golf team did their best to work through a rain-soaked course to place fourth at the 3A state tournament last week at the Sudden Valley Golf and Country Club in Bellingham.

The foursome of Katie Saucier, Melanie Trygg, Ryan Nottingham and Anna Bourland scored 66 team points to take home a fourth place trophy.

Head coach Steve Nielsen believes it’s the highest finish for a girls golf team in school history.

“I’m really proud,” he said. “They all played solid golf.”

Saucier finished out her prep career with a two day score of 160, good for a tie for eighth place with Kaitlin Parsons of Eastmont.

She was in fourth place after the first day with her score of 78.

Saucier struggled on the second day with an 82, but Nielsen wasn’t about to put any blame on her.

“She’s carried us for her entire career,” he said.

Bourland finished the first day in a tie for 19th with Caral Martinson of Shelton and Ashley Saffle of East Valley with a score of 86.

The freshman shot an 84 on the second day to finish the tournament in 18th place.

Nottingham and Trygg just made the cut on the first day with their scores of 95 and 97, respectively, but shot a 92 on the second day.

Nottingham finished in a tie with Hillary Evans of Shelton at 34th place, while Trygg ended up in a three way tie for 36th place with Whitney Welch of Eastmont and Stefanie Soelling of Everett.

Brittany Tallmann of Issaquah led both days of the tournament to win the individual title.

Interlake had two golfers place third and sixth, respectively, to help them win the team title by two points over Enumclaw.

Eastmont took third, followed by Bainbridge, Bellevue and Bainbridge’s rival in Holy Names.

Nielsen said he’s satisfied with how the team did.

“We got a trophy,” he said. “We feel good about it.”

Jamie Neill also went out on a high note when he finished in the top ten in the 3A boys state tournament at the Homestead Falls Golf Course in Lynden.

He shot a 74 the first day, then a 75 the next day to finish in a three way tie for eighth place with Cameron Peck of Timberline and Tyler McDougall of Eastmont.

Alex Moore of Hanford won a playoff on the second hole to win the individual title over Jens Bracht of Shorecrest and Matt Rawitzer of Squalicum.

Hanford also took the team title home by three points over O’Dea.

Boys relay takes third at Star Track

The Bainbridge boys 4×400 relay team ended their stellar season with a third place finish at Star Track this weekend at Edgar Brown Stadium in Pasco.

The foursome of Austin Hallett, Greg Nance, Patrick Wauters and Bevan Taylor won their heat Friday night with a time of 3:22.45 – over a second faster than the relay teams of Liberty, Lakes and Bonney Lake.

But in the final on Saturday afternoon, they took the bronze as Liberty won, followed by Renton.

The Spartans finished with a time of 3:22.55, just .41 of a second behind Liberty and .08 of a second behind Renton while East Valley of Spokane was .23 of a second behind them.

Taylor placed 11th in the 1600 with a time of 4:24.21.

Cheyne Clark tied for ninth with Gabe Cadero-Smith of Yelm, Jordan Wishard of Kelso, Cameron Fancher of Southridge and AJ Cox of Auburn-Riverside with a mark of 13 feet.

Quinton Agosta tied for 12th with Gabe Shoemaker of Shelton in the discus with a throw of 131 feet, one inch and placed 13th in the triple jump with a mark of 41 feet, 8.75 inches.

For the girls, Emily Farrar took seventh in the 1600 with a time of 5:11.45.

Tess Sadowsky didn’t make it out of her heat in the 300 hurdles with her time of 49.87.

Lauren Fleming tied for 12th in the high jump with Alice Verhovek of Holy Names, Molly Gibson of Shorecrest and Samantha King of Issaquah with a mark of four feet, eight inches.

Theresa Johansen took 13th in the discus with her throw of 97 feet, three inches.

Racqueteers make strong showing

The Spartan tennis trio of Molly Donohue, Jamie Slonaker and Brooke Shorett scored some wins, but they fell just short of placing at the 3A state tournament at the Tri-Cities Court Club and Kamiakin High School over the weekend.

“They seemed to have match after match but they never gave up,” head coach Mike Anderson said of their performance. “To still be in the tournament on the second day is very special.”

Donohue lost her first match to freshman Maggie Becker from White River 5-7, 4-6 in her opening round match Friday.

She came back to beat Melissa Nguyen of Hazen 6-3, 6-2 and Lisa Kromholtz of Peninsula 6-2, 7-5 in consolation matches later in the day.

Needing one more win to play for fourth place, she lost to Jennifer Skardon of Columbia River 0-6, 2-6.

Skardon went on to defeat Anissa Bryant-Swift of Sammamish 7-5, 6-2 for the fourth place trophy.

“You can’t say enough about Molly,” Anderson said. “She came back and played a lot of matches but she got some big wins.

“It got hot (weather-wise) but she gutted it out.”

The doubles team of Jamie Slonaker and Brooke Shorett won their first round match against Jessica Grover and Carly Holtgraves of Auburn 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

The duo lost their quarterfinal match to Vi Nguyen and Keilah Fanene of Evergreen 4-6, 6-3, 2-6 but rebounded to beat Maddie Guidos and Jennifer Cheadle of Highline 1-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Also needing one more win to place, Slonaker and Shorett lost to Brooke Foster and Jayme Gilmore of West Valley (Yakima) 1-6, 3-6.

Foster and Gilmore went on to defeat Lauren Whatley and Catherine Phelps of Lakeside for fourth place.

“They came back against a really good team (in Highline),” Anderson said. “They really wanted to keep on playing.”

West Valley of Yakima took home the team title, but Anderson said the trio performed like champs.

“I was very proud of them,” he said. “They represented Bainbridge really well and they did a great job.”
