Two girl teams win titles, while the boys defend their title in a shootout in Poulsbo.

Several Bainbridge select teams took home trophies at the 23rd annual Viking Cup in Poulsbo over Memorial Day weekend.

Bainbridge FC 92 Magic, the girls U15 team coached by Tom Weed and Phil Avison, won their championship final against Westsound FC 2-1 in overtime.

Goals were scored by Kelsey Stoner and Courtney Lewandowski.

Bainbridge FC 90, the girls U17-18 team coached by Peter Kepler and Phil Avison, won their final against North Kitsap Ambush 90 1-0.

The winning goal was scored on a header by Bryn Kepler for Bainbridge.

The defending Viking Cup U-18/19 Champion, the Bainbridge FC 89 boys team defeated West Sound 90 Krug in the finals of the Viking Cup tournament to keep hold of the trophy.

Falling to the Westsound team (a Premier level 1 team) 4-1 on Saturday in a preliminary game, Bainbridge – which relied on 5 guest players during the tournament because of missing regulars, –had to come from behind with only 10 players in their final bracket game to defeat NK Gold 4-2 on Sunday.

In the championship game, Bainbridge used a late first half goal by Ben Jones to tie the game 1-1 at the half.

The second half was closely played with neither side taking advantage of limited chances until West Sound went on top with less than 10 minutes remaining.

Bainbridge threw everyone into the attack and, with only seconds remaining and literally on the last kick of regulation, Dan Bergie dribbled across a crowded penalty box before finding a seam to hit a perfectly placed left footed blast over the outstretched keeper and just under the crossbar.

Neither team scored in the overtime so it went to a shootout, with Bainbridge converting their first three chances and Westsound missing their first three chances thanks to the brilliant goalkeeping of backup Bainbridge keeper Jesse Yourish to claim the championship.

Bainbridge FC 89 is a Premier level 2 team coached by Paul Aussendorf and Phil Avison and composed of players from Bainbridge Island, the Kitsap Peninsula, and Port Townsend such as Zach Pendt, Max Aussendorf, Zach Conner, Dan Bergie, Ross Bringgold, John Baggett, Jake Pedersen, Ben Jones, Jesse Yourish, Andrew Kitchen, Colin Barry, Jamie Hodgson, Clay Goodhue, Dana Olson, Sam Freedman, Sam Mouser and Colin Gremse.

They have won the Viking Cup Championship three of the last four years.

“We are very happy with how our teams competed,” Avison, the director of player development at Bainbridge FC said. “We are fortunate to have a number of very talented teams that can compete with the best in the county and beyond.”

Also competing in their first tournament was the Bainbridge Island FC Force ’94, who took part in the Starfire Classic in Tukwila over Memorial Day weekend. The team did not advance to finals play and finished in the middle of the pack at third in its bracket of five, and eighth in the field of 15 teams.

An aggressive defense by Kent’s Dosveedanya Red thwarted several attempts at the goal in the team’s first game on Saturday. The Force was shut-out in the game and lost.

On Sunday Force dominated the field in its second game against Cascade FC Athletica but was unable to score and finished the game with a non-scoring tie.

The final game against Federal Way’s Beez brought Force a commanding win of 8 to 1, giving them 13 points in the tournament and landing them third place in their bracket.

Goals were made by Emma Vukic, Bella Crowley, Brooke Watson, Sallie Marx, Haley Story and Elyse Fischer. The Force was assisted in the tournament by guest player Ali Blake, who filled in for Brianna Ledoux while sidelined with a broken toe.

BI rowing duo head to nationals

Sam Hobbs and Andrew Powers have successfully petitioned to race in the Junior National Rowing Regatta June 8-10 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Hobbs and Powers finished a very strong second in their junior men’s Double scull heat at the Northwest Regional Regatta in Vancouver, but the final was cancelled due to high winds.

The Bainbridge Island Rowing Club was therefore forced to petition for their entry into the National Regatta.

Hobbs and Powers will make the trip to Cincinnati with Mikey McGuire, who qualified in the junior women’s single scull.

“I’m very pleased that two boats from Bainbridge Island are going to Nationals,” Coach Morgan Seeley said. “This shows that our team can now compete on the national stage.”
