DiIorio leads BHS to a pair of wins
Continuing their penchant for close games, the BHS boys basketball team defeated Cleveland 52-48 on Tuesday night at the Eagles’ gym. The win raised the Spartans’ season record to 5-4 and 4-2 Metro League play. Six of the nine games have been decided by four points or less, with three going to overtime.
Will DiIorio’s 11 points highlighted balanced scoring for Bainbridge, as Ben Eisenhardt and Ryan Burris tallied 10 points apiece and David Korsak and Michael Stevenson both had eight.
On Friday, the visiting Spartans outscored Chief Sealth 33-15 in the middle two quarters to notch a 63-50 victory and hand the Seahawks their first in-state defeat. Burris had 19 points, while DiIorio added 18 and Paul Weese scored 10.
The team hosts Nathan Hale tonight and O’Dea tomorrow.
BHS GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Big week for 6-1 girls’ team
Three winning streaks are on the line this weekend as the Metro League Sound Division-leading BHS girls’ basketball team hosts the other division leaders. Tonight the Spartans play Nathan Hale, tied with Franklin for the top spot in the Valley Division. The Raiders are riding a six-game winning streak en route to a 7-3 overall record, 4-1 record. Tomorrow the team takes on Holy Names (9-1, 6-0 Metro and winners of eight straight). The two teams are tied for fifth in the Associated Press poll, while the Seattle Times has Bainbridge fifth and the Cougars sixth.
The girls won a pair of road games to run their season record to 6-1, 5-0 Metro. The Spartans have won their last five since losing to Mercer Island six weeks ago. They defeated Cleveland 59-52 on Wednesday behind Brittany Gray’s 25 points. Anna Wood added 13 while Jesse Vincent scored 11.
The team beat Chief Sealth 64-29 last Friday. A 21-point second quarter pushed the halftime edge to 32-12 and removed any doubt about the outcome. Gray led the Spartan attack with 21 points and 16 rebounds. Wood had eight points, Rebecca Sharar and Vincent had seven apiece and Cas Totura six.
BHS SWIMMING
Swimmers post several state-qualifying times
Facing an outmanned Franklin team on Tuesday, BHS swim coach Greg Colby entered several of his top swimmers in non-customary events. The Spartans won the first nine events and the final score was 110-43. For Bainbridge, David Ortyn (100 free, 51.53 and 200 free, 1:54.46) and Cody Jenkins (50 free, 24.41 and 100 fly, 58.53) both won twice. Andrew McCarthy placed fifth in the 500 free in a state-qualifying 4:53.65 to pace Spartan swimmers at the Kentridge Invitational on Saturday. Ortyn was the only other Bainbridge swimmer to make the finals, swimming a state-qualifying 1:49.84 for eighth place in the 200 free. Bainbridge placed eighth in the prestigious event. The day before, the Spartans won four of the first five events against Seattle Prep. But the Panthers dominated the rest of the meet en route to a 107-63 win.
BHS WRESTLING
Wrestlers win matches, lose team standings
Bainbridge won five of seven contested matches against Franklin – all via falls – on Tuesday, but the team’s lack of depth resulted in a 42-30 loss to the visiting Quakers. Spartan winners and pin times: 103 pounds – Alec Griewe, 55 seconds; 140 – Eli Narte, 1:19; 145 – Mike Furman, 3:58; 160 – Corey Touchette, 2:34; 189 – Mason Remy, 31 seconds.
Narte won the 140-pound weight classification at the 26th Island Invitational on Saturday, pinning his opponent at 2:31. Furman (145) also made the finals, but lost via decision. Remy (189) placed fifth with a fall at :44 in his final match, Griewe (103) was sixth and Karl Hunt (171) seventh. Bainbridge placed 11th among 13 teams.
The Spartans dropped a pair of close matches last Thursday, losing to Blanchet 42-36 and Chief Sealth 39-36.
