BHS runners have strong performances
Isabel Ferguson’s clocking of two minutes, 24.43 seconds in her heat of the 800 meters highlighted the Bainbridge Island Track Club’s participation at the 2009 Indoor Preview at the University of Washington’s Dempsey Indoor Center on Sunday.
Competing against largely collegiate competition in their respective races, the seven BITC runners – all of whom will compete for BHS in track during the spring – “did well for this early time in the season,” according to coach Gary Osmond.
Osmond and the group’s other coaches anticipate even better performances when the team returns to the Dempsey facility for another meet on Feb. 15.

BHS Swimming
Spartans drop dual meet to Lakeside
Spartan swimmers had two state qualifying marks and won five of the 11 events, but lost to Lakeside 96-74 last Friday at the Helene Madison Pool in Seattle.
Andrew McCarthy swam 1:50.69 in the 200 free, while the 400 free relay of David Ortyn, McCarthy, Cody Jenkins and Colin Chupik recorded a 3:27.52 clocking. Other Bainbridge winners were Ortyn (200 IM, 2:07.66), Jenkins (100 fly, 57.09), and Chupik (100 free, 51.37).
“I think we’re on track [for the upcoming district and state meets next month],” said coach Greg Colby. “The boys have stepped up and they’re doing a great job in practices.”
The team’s final dual meet is today against Eastside Catholic at the Rainier Beach pool.
BAINBRIDGE GYMNASTICS
Callahan leads Spartans to victory
Kathleen Callahan scored 34.15 points to win the all-around as the Bainbridge gymnasts won a six-team meet hosted by Shorewood High School last Saturday.
The Spartans scored 165.5 points to lead North Kitsap (151.0), Shorewood (141.0), Shorecrest (88.9), Kingston (28.8) and Central Kitsap (22.4).
Annie Zuckerman (33.80) was third in all-around, Adrienne Palay (32.75) fourth, and Anne Schwartz (32.50) sixth as Bainbridge girls won three of the four individual events.
Schwartz and Palay (8.8) tied for first in vault, Zuckerman’s 8.75 was the top mark on beam, while Callahan led in bars with 8.0.
Rachel Kaminer was the top Spartan in floor exercise with a score of 9.2.
The previous day, Anne Schwartz led a 1-5 Bainbridge sweep in the all-around as the Spartans scored 154.85 points to defeat Nathan Hale (132.45) and Ingraham (30.4).
Schwartz had 31.8, Katie Mathews 31.1, Kaminer 30.5, Palay 30.4 and Talia Weiss 30.3.
Weiss won bars with a 7.1 score, Kaminer and Schwartz tied in beam at 8.6, Schwartz had the top mark in floor exercise with 7.8, and Schwartz, Mathews and Zuckerman finished in a three-way tie for second in the vault at 8.4
BHS BASKETBALL
Gray, Eisenhardt nominated for All-American team
BHS basketball players Ben Eisenhardt and Brittany Gray are among 41 Washington state nominations for the 2009 McDonald’s All-American Basketball Team.
The selection process eventually narrows hundreds of the nation’s top prep hoopsters into two squads of 10 players, divided into East and West, for a game televised on ESPN in Miami on April 1.
The program was established in 1977 (the girls were added in 2002) and counts Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James among the more than 900 standouts who have participated.
Being named to the team is generally regarded as the highest honor a high school player can receive.
