Boys swimming

Andrew McCarthy broke the pool record in the 200 freestyle Friday as the Bainbridge boys’ swim team defeated Nathan Hale 105-63 in the last home meet of the regular season.

The junior posted a time of 1:45.15, one of three swimmers that posted state qualifying times in the event. Todd McCarthy and Colin Chupik had times of 1:48.14 and 1:48.52, respectively.

Both McCarthy brothers had state qualifying times in the 500 freestyle. Andrew posted a time of 4:39.94 while Todd posted a time of 4:48.33.

The 400 freestyle relay team of Todd and Andrew McCarthy, Spencer Alpaugh and Chupik posted a state qualifying time of 3:25.68.

The Spartans travel to Queen Anne Pool to take on Seattle Prep Friday to end the regular season, then head to the All-Comers Meet Saturday at Madison Pool in Seattle.

Bainbridge heads back to Madison Pool Feb. 4 and 5 for the Metro tournament.

Wrestling

The Bainbridge wrestling team collected two more dual meet wins Thursday by beating Chief Sealth 48-24 and Cleveland 66-6.

Against the Seahawks, Alex Hoover won by pinfall over Joshauna Adams in 57 seconds in the 140-pound category.

Karl Hunt won by pinfall over Vincent Sikes in 1:17 in the 215-pound category while Calvin Gurtler pinned Larry Mao in 1:42 in the 125-pound category.

Against the Eagles, Ryan Henesey won by pinfall over Aaron Fulton in 33 seconds in the 140-pound category while Henry Wienkers won by pinfall over Mike Jones in 51 seconds in the 145-pound category.

In the 152-pound category, Sean Kennedy pinned Jubei Moliga in 1:20 while Bryce MacDonald pinned Carlos Neyeto in 3:48 in the 130-pound category. Dylan Read pinned Johnson Nguyen in 4:21 in the 119-pound category while Caleb Samson pinned Armetris Joe in 4:48 in the 135-pound category. Tyler Moniz pinned Angel Mason in the 160-pound category.

At the Renton Invitational Saturday, the Spartans took ninth out of 12 teams.

Corey Touchette came away with another medal as he took first in the 160-pound category. He is the only Bainbridge wrestler listed in the Washington Wrestling Report’s rankings in the 3A 171-pound weight class.

Hunt took third in the 189-pound category while Connor Kenyon took third in the 171-pound category and Weber Coryell was third in the 152-pound category.

The Spartans hosted Nathan Hale Thursday night, but results were not available as of press time.

Bainbridge hosts Franklin and Rainier Beach Friday at 2:30 p.m. in a makeup match to wrap up the regular season. They travel to Chief Sealth Feb. 4 and 5 for the Metro tournament.

Gymnastics

The Bainbridge gymnastics team won another dual meet Friday as they beat Chief Sealth and West Seattle.

The Spartans scored 149.3 points.

Adrienne Palay took first in the all-around with 31.85 points. She tied for first on the beam with a score of 8.1 with Rachel Kaminer and first on the floor exercise with a score of 8.1.

Kaminer was third in the all-around with a score of 31.10. She took third in the vault with a score of 8.2, the bars and the floor.

Anne Schwartz finished fourth in the all-around with a score of 29.9. She took first in the vault with a score of 8.4 and took second on the floor, fourth on the beam and fifth on the bars.

Marielle Summers placed fifth in the all-around. She finished fourth on the bars, tied for fourth with Palay on the vault and Brenna Boone on the floor. Summers placed sixth on the vault.

Laura Hilst finished sixth in the all-around. She was fifth on the beam and sixth in the bars, the floor and the vault.

Bainbridge hosts Kingston and North Kitsap at 6 p.m. Friday to wrap up the regular season. They host the Metro tournament Feb. 4.

Basketball

Both basketball teams are still in the fight for the playoffs.

The girls took a step towards its second straight Metro League Sound Division title with a win over division foes West Seattle Friday by the score of 68-24 and Chief Sealth Tuesday by the score of 74-49.

The boys lost 85-71 to West Seattle Friday and lost to Chief Sealth 66-33 Tuesday.

For the girls against the Wildcats, the Spartans led 17-6 after one quarter and cruised the rest of the way. Bainbridge held West Seattle to single digits in each quarter.

Grace Kenyon led all scorers with 25 points and eight rebounds. Wesley Nottingham added 10 points and Hannah Depew had 10 points, nine steals and five assists. Ariel Fountain had four points and 11 rebounds.

Against the Seahawks, 12 different players scored for the Spartans. Depew led all scorers with 18 points, six steals and three assists.

Nottingham scored 12 points while Kenyon scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

For the boys against the Wildcats, Rico Failla went off for nine three-pointers and 35 points to lead all scorers. Chris Bell added 16 points and Michael Crowley scored 12 points.

Against the Seahawks, only five players scored as the Spartans were held to just 12 points between the second and third quarter.

Bell led Bainbridge with 13 points while Failla added 10 points.

Both teams travel to Rainier Beach Friday, then host Chief Sealth Saturday. The girls play at 4 p.m. while the boys play at 6:15 p.m.

Both teams host the Vikings next week for the last home game of the regular season. The boys play at 7 p.m. Tuesday while the girls play at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
