Several Bainbridge Island Rowing boats came home with medals from the U.S. Rowing Northwest Junior District Championships May 20-22 at Vancouver Lake in Vancouver.
Ena Nimb and Rachel Schneiderman qualified for the U.S. Rowing Youth National Regatta with their third place finish in the women’s varsity double scull finals. The duo beat out a boat from the Ashland Juniors Rowing Club in Oregon by .05 of a second to make the national meet, which is June 10-12 at Oak Ridge, Tenn.
For the Spartan girls, the women’s second varsity lightweight four of Sunday Starbuck, Kate Hathaway, Vanessa Beck, Hannah Miller and coxswain Gen Sawyer placed first in the finals.
The women’s novice four of Katie Gao, Brianna Ledoux, Anna Obergottsberger, Justeen Komok and coxswain Olivia Moeller took first in the finals as did the women’s second novice four of Katie Alpaugh, Hannah Schneiderman, Kylie Van Aken, Kate Hathaway and coxswain Madeline Crawford.
The women’s second varsity coxed pair of Lena Goss and Isabel Vassiliades took second as did Deni Murray in the women’s lightweight single scull finals.
The women’s novice eight of Isabel Brofsky, Ledoux, Kylie Van Aken, Hannah Schneiderman, Katie Alpaugh, Kate Hathaway, Obergottsberger, Komok and coxswain Madeline Crawford took third as did the women’s second varsity four of Makaila O’Brien, Bryn Olason, Elsa Brown, Hanna Christofferson and coxswain Natassja Haught.
For the boys, the varsity lightweight eight of Nate Stockman, Tyler Sheldon, Sam Bishoff, Bryson Allen, Edward Hawley, Caleb Samson, Luca Lezzi, Jackson Beall and coxswain Louise Mataso took fourth overall while the varsity lightweight four of Stockman, Sheldon, Bishoff, Allen and Mataso took third.
Sean Kelly was second in the varsity lightweight single scull final while the second novice four of Ethan Dunaway, Gavin Hollyer, Timmy Taylor, Rory Knottnerus and coxswain Moeller took third.
Rope Skippers score high at tournament
The Bainbridge Island Rope Skippers had several athletes take home medals at the 31st annual Pacific Northwest Tournament of Champions May 14 in Kirkland.
In the speed events, Anna Bjur took first in the rookie single rope 30 second speed event for the 11-12-year-old age category while Grace Duffy and Claire Dumouchel tied for first in the single rope 30 second speed event for the 10-year-old and under age category.
Jessica Fay, Sarah Sharman and Abigail Harrison took first in the double dutch speed relay for the 15-17-year-old age group while Amanda Stevenson, Hannah Sprague and Anna Warga took first in the 18-and-over age category.

In the freestyle events, Serena Johnson took first in the single rope freestyle for the 11-12-year-old age category while Bryn Stephenson and Matthew Midgett took first in the single rope pairs freestyle for the 13-14-year-old age category.
Ultimate team wins tournament
The Bainbridge High School ultimate team took first in the B Division tournament May 21. It defeated Overlake 10-7, Kamiak 14-10 and Aviation High School 15-2 in the finals. It finished the season ninth overall out of 22 teams.
The team went 1-8 in the A Division for the regular season. Based on its record, it was moved into the B Division for the playoffs.
Head coach and co-founder Andrew Lovejoy said they are trying to secure club sport status for next year.

Come celebrate the success of BHS sports
The Bainbridge High School athletics program is holding a Spartan Sports Celebration and open house from 7-8:30 p.m. in the BHS Commons. There will be a media presentation as all 26 programs will be honored. Refreshments will be served.
