Boys Basketball: DiIorio named All-Kitsap starter
Two Bainbridge players were named to the 2009-10 All-Kitsap County Boys Basketball Team, which was compiled by the sports writers for the Bainbridge Island Review, Bremerton Patriot, Central Kitsap Reporter, North Kitsap Herald and Port Orchard Independent.
Senior guard Will DiIorio was selected as an All-Kitsap starter. He led the Spartans in most statistical categories, averaging 19 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and three steals per game. He scored a season-high 28 points to help Bainbridge defeat 10th-ranked O’Dea High School early in the season.
Senior forward Ryan Burris was named to the All-Kitsap bench. He posted 13 points and seven rebounds a game. As the only Spartan other than DiIorio to average double digits, Burris stepped up as the Spartans’ leading scorer on several occasions.
Candidates for the team were nominated by the writers for their respective areas. The nominees were then voted on by the writers, with the top vote-getters making the starting lineup. A Coach of the Year, bench and honorable mentions also were selected. The team includes the best players from area schools who not only performed well individually, but played a role in the success of their team as well.
Diving Club
The Bainbridge Island Diving Club competed in the U.S. Diving Region 10 Championships in Tualatin, Ore., on March 5.
The top six divers in each age group qualified for the West National Championships in Minneapolis later this spring. More than 150 divers from seven states competed.
In the 11-and-under age group, Cammy Rouser, a member of the team from Kingston, competed in her first Junior Olympic meet, placing 18th on one-meter and 14th on three-meter springboard. Georgina Milne finished seventh on one-meter and eighth on three-meter.
In the 14-15 age group, Kittie Cooper finished 24th on one-meter and 22nd on three-meter. Shannon Engelbrecht placed 12th on one-meter and 17th on three-meter.
In the 16-18 age group, Koki Kresser scored 66.80 for 42nd place on one-meter and 178.10 for 35th place on three-meter. Lilia Paul scored 65.85 for 43rd place and 213.35 for 33rd place on three-meter.
The club will travel to Vancouver, B.C. for Provincial Winter Championships at the end of March.
Club Gymnastics
The Bainbridge Island Gymnastics Club team competed in the Rose City Challenge in Portland on March 5-6. More than 900 gymnasts competed in the event.
At level nine, Tim Forro placed second in the all-around with second-place finishes on pommel horse, vault and high bar. Bryan Peterson placed third all-around with first-place finishes on floor and parallel bars.
Nathaniel Opalski, a level seven gymnast, tied for fifth all-around and took first on vault and third on rings and high bar.
At level five, Henry Brown tied for second on parallel bars and finished fifth in the all-around with a score of 85.5. Cole Lewis placed second with an all-around score of 83.3 and finished first on high bar and pommel horse.
In the 12-and-up age group, Eric Powell took third place all-around with a score of 82.9 and a second place on vault. Duncan Wallace placed eighth on parallel bars.
Level four gymnast Ian Mathews placed second on parallel bars and high bar and fourth all-around.
On the girls team, at level eight, Katie Mathews placed first on floor and second in the all-around with a score of 33.9 while Chloe Seferos placed second on floor with a 9.5 and fourth in the all-around.
Competing at level seven, Marielle Summers and Sarah Rice earned fourth place on vault in their respective age groups and Miller Shor earned an 8.9 on floor.
At level five, Jianna Kaufman finished first on vault, second on bars and second in the all-around with a 35.2. Mia Bruzzo placed first on floor and third on vault and beam, placing third all-around with a 34.35.
Siqi Talley came in fith on bars and Morgan Dierickx placed fourth on vault.
Competing at level four, Remi Rosencrans finished second on floor, third on vault and all-around, while Mariko Ronan placed first on vault and third on bars.
The girls team travels to Metropolitan Gymnastics on March 13 for its final regular-season meet.
Bainbridge Island Ropeskippers
Two hundred ropeskippers are expected to compete in an exhibition match hosted by the Bainbridge Island Ropeskippers at Woodward Middle School from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday.
Competitors as young as five will also compete at this tournament, in speed and freestyle events.
There are no admission fees.
Logan Relays Invitational and Community Run
The Bainbridge, Kingston and North Kitsap high school track teams will compete in the first annual Logan Relays Invitational and Community Run Saturday.
The event, which will be held from 1-4 p.m. at the Bainbridge High School Stadium, will feature 10 different relays as well as a one-mile community run open to those 13 years and up.
The invitational is dedicated in memory of Pat Logan, who was a Bainbridge middle-distance track coach until his death in November 2008.
There are no gate or entry fees.
Tennis
The Spartans begin league play at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Seattle Prep and will continue on the road Wednesday against Eastside Catholic.
The Spartans will hold their season opener March 19 against Holy Names and O’Dea.
Lacrosse
The Bainbridge boys lacrosse team begins its season against Lake Taps at 7 p.m. Thursday.
The Spartans will host their first home game against Mercer Island at 7 p.m. March 20.
The girls lacrosse team also starts the season on the road against Lakeside at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday. The team will hold its first home contest March 24 against Seattle Prep.
Soccer
The Spartan soccer team will take on Issaquah in its season opener at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Bainbridge will continue its three-game homestand with matches against Lakeside at 6 p.m. Thursday and O’Dea March 23.
