Cross country

The team kicked off its season Saturday in an atypical race, the Tahoma Coed Relays. Thirty schools entered the race, and each school fielded multiple teams. The top team from Bainbridge featured Sean LeBelle, Willie Wenzlau, Annie Taylor, Emily Barreca and John Murphy and finished seventh overall with a time of 56 minutes, 49 seconds.

Running against Seattle Prep, Nathan Hale and Ingraham Wednesday, the Spartan runners finished with some impressive individual times, but fourth among the teams.

For the girls, Barreca won the 5k race at Lower Woodland Park with a time of 19:49. Right behind her was teammate Isabel Ferguson, who finished at 20:08. Taylor finished sixth and Courtney Odell seventh for Bainbridge with times of 21:10 and 22:40.

On the boys’ side Wenzlau took third place overall in 17:56. LaBelle was Bainbridge’s second strongest runner, finishing sixth overall with a time of 18:28.

Boys golf

The boys traveled across the pond Tuesday and coasted to an easy win (154-37) over Franklin at Jefferson Park Golf Course in Seattle.

Carl Jonson and Will Whealdon were one under par, each shooting a 35. Bobby Griffin shot an even par 36, and Jack Seidl and Rusty Furth posted 39. Alex Raquer shot 40 and Davis Harrison and Kyle Schneider finished with 41.

A day later, Bainbridge again won easily, defeating Nathan Hale 155-87. Bainbridge’s top six players shot a combined 7-over-par in the match.

Soccer

In its third game of the season, Bainbridge coasted to an 8-0 shutout of Sequim. The team scored four goals in each half, and Morgan Moniz scored two goals in three minutes of game time.

Thursday Bainbridge hosted Lakeside. The Spartans took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Moniz in the 31st minute. Lakeside took over after that, scoring three straight goals to win the game. The Spartans have an even 2-2 record so far this season.

Swimming

Tuesday Bainbridge travelled to Kamiak and won a close meet by a score of 93-90. Bainbridge won eight of the 12 events, and freshman Kay Sterner’s time of 5:26.59 was fast enough to qualify her for state. The time was almost 30 seconds faster than the second place finisher.

Volleyball

Bainbridge lost its conference opener to Central Kitsap Tuesday, three matches to none. The Spartans stayed close in each of the three games but eventually lost 25-16, 25-17, 25-19.

Waterpolo

Teamray kicked off its season last Friday against Newport, one of the tougher teams in the division. Bainbridge lost 12-6, but played solid defense for the whole game. Offensively, the team was led by seniors Mike Kilbane, Ian Layton and Lex Burgin, each of whom scored twice.
