Tennis moves onto districts

The Bainbridge tennis team got seven to districts, but suffered some big losses in the Metro tournament.

The biggest was Spencer Cheng, the boys’ number one singles player, who lost to O’Dea’s Abraham Abdolhusseinni 5-7, 4-6.

Head coach Mike Anderson said Cheng drew Abdolhusseinni twice even after they redid the draw due to a mistake.

“It was like the hand of fate,” he said. “The kid (Abdolhusseinni) played the match of his life.

“It was a disappointing way to go out for him.”

But there were some big winners as well.

Unseeded Becky Gottlieb made it to districts as she defeated Bridget Hyland of Ingraham in a three set match and upset sixth seeded Taylor Matalone of West Seattle.

She lost to Rachel Storz of Holy Names and Brittany Roland of Seattle Prep on the second day, but she made it to districts as the seventh seed because only two players from a school can make it.

“She didn’t have a very good year, but she won two big matches,” Anderson said.

Also moving on is Nash Reijnen, who beat Alex Van-den-ende of West Seattle and David Hancock of Bishop Blanchet to move on.

He lost two tough three match sets to Miles Hubbard of Blanchet and Abdolhusseinni to take the sixth seed.

“He had a headache but he gutted it out,” Anderson said.

Molly Donohue won her first two matches easily but lost to Nicole Fleckenstein of Seattle Prep in the semifinals.

She bounced back to defeat Eastside Catholic’s Monica Taylor for the third seed to districts.

On the doubles’ side, eight seeded Taylor Lea and Erik Saksa are moving onto districts.

They beat the doubles teams from Ingraham and Nathan Hale, but lost to Wes Nomi and Andrew LaCava of Seattle Prep in the quarterfinal.

They came back to beat Max Barr and George Tercero of Blanchet for the sixth seed.

The doubles team of Brooke Shorett and Jamie Slonaker made it as they defeated the doubles team from Holy Names and the seventh seeded team of Abby Barr and Beth Sobba of Blanchet before losing to Lauren Whatley and Catherine Phelps of Lakeside.

Shorett and Slonaker lost to Annika Finne and Caroline Daly of Lakeside for fourth place in a tough three match set to get the fourth seed to districts.

“I’m happy to have seven players in districts,” Anderson said. “We get one extra allocation this year, so maybe one of our kids can sneak in there.”

The 3A Sea-King district tournament is at Lower Woodland Park and it starts next Tuesday at 9 a.m.

Tracksters in good standing

Cheyne Clark won his first Metro track title in the pole vault with a mark of 13 feet, nine inches as the Bainbridge track teams competed in the Metro Championships this week at the Southwest Complex in West Seattle.

Clark will move onto districts as will Chris Darling, who took fourth in the same event with a mark of 10 feet, six inches.

Quinton Agosta is also in as he finished third in the triple jump with a mark of 42 feet, 6.5 inches.

Bevan Taylor finished fifth in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:28.86 while Theo Hunt and Ian Shiach made it to districts with their fourth and seventh place finishes in the 800 meter run.

The boys 4×400 relay is seeded in second.

For the girls, Theresa Johansen placed second in the discus with her throw of 98 feet, three inches while Lauren Fleming took second in the high jump with a mark of four feet, eight inches.

Tess Sadowsky is moving on with a pair of fourth place finishes in the 100 and 300 hurdles, while Emily Farrar finished seventh in the 3200.

Sylvia Stellmacher and Molly O’Keefe took fifth and seventh, respectively, in the 400 while Maddie Sheldon took seventh in the 100.

The finals for the meet were yesterday.

Kickers get one last shot

The Bainbridge boys soccer team is still on the cusp of making it back to the state tournament.

They lost to Eastside Catholic 2-0 on Wednesday in a Metro League tournament semifinal game, but defeated Nathan Hale 3-2 in overtime on Thursday in the third/fourth place game to enter a winner to state game.

Dylan Tucker-Ganges had two goals and a assist, including the one he put in off an assist from Jimmy Baggett in the first moments of overtime for the win.

“It was a very even encounter of two tired teams,” head coach George Vukic said.

“It was a very gritty win that showed our character.”

The Spartans play Mercer Island today at noon at Ingraham High School.

Fastpitchers lose to Cougars

SEATTLE – Even when they get the breaks, the Bainbridge fastpitch team can’t beat Holy Names.

Farleigh Winters scored the winning run on a misplayed fly ball and several bad throws as the Cougars defeated the Spartans 2-1 in a eight inning heart breaker at a Metro League tournament semifinal game Thursday at Lower Woodland Field in Seattle.

“It’s hard,” said a despondent Liz McCloskey after the game. “You think how can you lose to a team seven times now? It makes me want to cry a little, but they’re (Holy Names) a talented group of kids.

“The worst part is that we’ve played with them every single game (this season),” she continued. “I told the girls that the team that made the least mistakes would win the game.”

Holy Names scored first when pitcher Farleigh Winters singled and advanced to second on a misplayed ball. She took third on a wild pitch, then scored on a single.

Bainbridge didn’t score until their last at bat, when Chelsea Baker got on with an infield single.

Haylee Baker popped one up to Winters, but she and the second baseman collided, dropping the ball.

Chelsea was thrown out, but Chelsie Kakela just missed a homer to centerfield, scoring Kelcee Azure who went in as a pinch runner.

In the eighth, Wintersole hit a pop up that second baseman Kakela and rightfielder Meika Monroe had trouble getting a read on due to the sun.

Monroe made the catch but couldn’t regain her balance, dropping the ball.

Kakela tried to get her at third, but the throw got by, and Kaitlin Gaspitch’s throw wasn’t in time.

“I have reflected on the loss to Holy Names one too many times today,” Brittany Wisner said. “It’s rough.”

Bainbridge played West Seattle yesterday for third place.

Kakela, Wisner and Haylee Baker will be holding a softball clinic with the Diamond Dusters May 20 at Strawberry Hill Park.

The cost is $35 for the skills workshop and $15 for the pitching workshop. Lunch will be provided.

It is available for players ages 8-14.
