What a night for 9-year-old Alex Douthart.
She opened the fifth Kiwanis All-Comers Track Meet on Monday, Aug. 7, by beating more than 20 other runners of all ages in the jogger’s mile (finishing just seconds over her predicted 9:00), and then went on to win five more age-based group races: the 60-, 100-, 60-meter hurdles, 200-, and 400-meters (that last one in an impressive 1:29, no less).
Winners of four events included Fiona Livingston (age 5) and Alexandra Velisaris (11) – who finished second to Douthart in the 400 – and the almost unbeatable Dennon sisters: Darya (8) and Karina (10), said event organizer Paul Benton.
Georgia St Clair (3) and Ruby Whitmire (6) each won three.
Seven-year-old Austin Fixter was the boy’s star this week, Benton added, winning all five events he entered, including a fast 1:29 in the 8-and-under 400-meter dash.
The usually dominant Howard Howlett (9) embraced a new challenge Monday, when Benton, admittedly scrambling to avoid two heats of 9-year- ld boys, moved him up to race against the 10-year-olds.
In the 60- and 100-meters, Howlett finished just behind speedy Charlie Hill, but he tied Hill in the 60-meter hurdles and went on to win both the 200- and the 400-meters, edging out Eli Dugan in a remarkably fast 1:21, before teaming up with Hill on the winning 4×100 relay team.
Dependable Liam Boyce (6) won four events, while Christopher Bourgeois (5) joined Howlett and Hill in winning three.
In the meet’s exciting last event, Benton said, three mixed-gender teams of Bainbridge High School cross country runners — the meet’s volunteer judges and timers — rushed through near darkness to finish the 4×100 relay within seconds of each other.
The last Kiwanis All-Comer’s Meet of the season was held Monday, Aug. 14, bringing to an end another summer of amateur athletic tradition at the Bainbridge High School track.
