The Mike Tice Foundation held its third Celebrity Golf Tournament at White Horse Golf Course in Kingston July 15.
28 sports celebrities led teams of golfers at the tourney. Some are well-known to Seattle fans, like Steve Largent (NFL Hall of Fame Seahawk wide receiver), Paul Moyer (Seahawk safety), Jim Zorn and Warren Moon (Hawks quarterbacks), Mack Strong (Seahawk fullback), Norm Johnson (Hawk kicker), Bret Boone (Mariners second baseman), John Olreud (M’s first baseman, two-time World Series champion and 1993 batting champion) and Jack Sikma (NBA Hall of Fame, Sonics center-forward).
Well-known players from out of the area included coach Brian Billick, who won a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens in 2001. Billick’s assistant on that team, Jack Del Rio, who later was head coach for the Raiders, also was there.
Tice estimated that charitable contributions would be around $150,000, which would go to various Puget Sound organizations, led by Boys and Girls Clubs. Kitsap County clubs receive nearly 30% of the funds.
Tice’s connection to the Puget Sound extends back to the early 1980s when he joined the Seattle Seahawks to play tight end. He played for the Washington Redskins and Minnesota Vikings, and coached for the Vikings, Jacksonville Jaguars, Chicago Bears, Atlanta Falcons and Oakland Raiders.
Tice’s first charitable effort in 2011 was a cooperative effort among friends across the nation, and benefited the Boys and Girls Club of Linden, NV. The nonprofit has no paid members and is run by volunteers, many of whom are Tice family members, like his son, Nate, and his three sisters who were at the tourney.
The event also included a fundraising dinner and other social activities at the Clearwater Casino Resort July 14.
