The Bainbridge varsity football team were crushed at an away game against O’Dea High  Thursday Oct. 24 at West Seattle Stadium, and barely managed a fourth-quarter touchdown to avoid a shutout.

The final score was 49-7 O’Dea.

The Spartans have yet to win a game this season. The team’s current record is 0-4 in conference play and 0-8 overall.

“Our goal was to compete to the best of our ability,” said Spartan Head Coach Andy Grimm. “And I think, for that game, we competed real hard. We had continued growth on offense and defense. We knew going into it that it was a great team we were going up against.”

Spartan quarterback Kyle Jackson only managed to pass 63 yards the entire game.

Taylor Wilson led the team’s rushing efforts with 18 carries for 80 yards.

Jackson managed 16 carries for 75 yards, while Tino Peleti completed four carries for 11 yards and Duncan McCombs finished with one carry for eight yards.

Jackson also scored the sole BHS touchdown.

Max Wickline completed one reception for six yards, while McCombs finished the game with one reception for 30 yards.

Paris Amore had one reception for one yard, Peleti completed one reception for five yards and Casey Brink finished with two receptions for 21 yards.

“Overall I thought it was a good effort by the boys,” Grimm said. “I thought the kids handled it well.”

Defensively, the game got away from the Spartans early, with O’Dea leading 35-0 at the end of the first half.

Jarett Grimm lead the team’s efforts with seven unassisted and three assisted tackles.

Amore managed six unassisted tackles, while Wilson finished the game with four unassisted and one assisted tackle and Max Thomas successfully completed four unassisted tackles.

“What we focus on is that it doesn’t matter who is out there,” Grimm said.

“Defensively we need to continue to attack people and get to people before they get going. We’re playing teams with lots of speed,” he said.

The Spartans will get two more chances this season to redeem themselves.

“We didn’t make playoffs,” Grimm explained. “So what they do is match up our division with the public school side in Seattle, and whatever place you’re sitting at you play the team that’s straight across on the bracket.”

BHS will play their first post-season game at home at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1 against Franklin High.

The Spartans will play their final game of the 2013 season the following week on the road Thursday, Nov. 7 against Washington High.
