The Spartans battered the Braves 27-17 to win a crucial Homecoming Week victory in football.

It was a big win, to say the least.

“They came in undefeated,” said Spartan Coach Andy Grimm of the Braves’ record. “But I knew they hadn’t had a challenging game yet.”

Bainbridge was ready to give them the challenge they were waiting for and as the Spartans came out strong, scoring 27 points to Seattle’s Bishop Blanchet’s 17.

Despite the Braves’ sideline chanting and staggering numbers — 76 players to the Spartans’ 45 — Bainbridge powered through the night en-route to a 10-point lead that won them the game, due in part by two field goals kicked by senior Sam Kallas.

“We were feeling confident that we needed to get points anytime we were inside the 30-yard line,” Grimm said.

“We went for it and Sam did a nice job on those. Those aren’t easy — you got to snap, block and get a good hold,” he said.

Senior wide receiver Zander Silverman scored the first touchdown of the game in the first quarter to give the Spartans an early lead.

Bainbridge quickly followed up with a field goal after regaining possession of the ball.

“We had a good first quarter, we set the tone,” Grimm said. “And then we kind of lost our way during the second quarter.”

The Braves managed to score their own field goal during the second quarter.

Blanchet quickly put themselves barely ahead of the Spartans with another touchdown by junior wide receiver Ray Siderius shortly before halftime, setting the score at Spartans 9, Braves 10.

“We challenged (the team) at half time,” Grimm said. “And talked with them about turning it around and they really came out and gave a great effort.”

The effort started with senior running back Matt Stone quickly knocking down Blanchet’s lead with a third-quarter touchdown.

Stone widened the gap between the teams with yet another touchdown at the start of the fourth.

The Braves would not recover and remained chasing the Spartans the rest of the night, despite an inspiring 80-yard touchdown run by freshman Brave Oshea Trujillo. It was Blanchet’s last score of the game, topping them off at 17 points.

It wasn’t the last score for Bainbridge, however, who had one more field goal left in them to end out the game with 27 points.

The Spartans finished the game with 243 yards on the ground. Senior Max Wysong successfully sacked the Braves for a three-yard loss, and Justin Totura had a sack for a 10-yard loss.

Bainbridge goes up against the Seattle Prep Panthers on Friday, Oct. 5.

Grimm said that it will be just like any other game.

“Just every week, we got to execute at a high level,” he said.
